I would never label a certain type of reed the "best", because they are made for different jobs, they all sound different, and different players have their different preferences. Judging one type of reed the best solely based on its timbre would be prejudice. I personally use three types of reed for different jobs, Rico Royal for practicing, Java for Concert music, with either Java or Jazz Select for Jazz music. Java has a very round, smooth sound, so I use it for bluesy jazz, while Jazz Select is bright and piercing, so I use it for upbeat music which calls for loudness. Either reed does the job, just different ones. But still, Jazz Select is an excellent reed and I recommend it to beginner/intermediate players who are playing jazz, especially improvisation for its free-blowing and cheerful quality.

Rico Jazz Reeds are easy to play right out the box and sound great. These reeds may not last as long as other brands, but they are more consistent and a higher percentage of them play well.

You know the story of many sax players about other reeds, so I'll save you time. In comparison with other reeds (you can name them all) what I found in RSJ filed is that they open up to frequencies never heard in other reeds. Is "like" going from 50-50 to 20-20 (hrz-khrz). Another thing is that you can actually use more reeds per box than other brands. I definitely recommend them.

The best reed ever ... It gives a nice brilliant tone without a buzzzzzz. Perfect for any style. In our Big Band ... we play different styles and RSJ can play them all. You'll get comments on your tone with them !

These reeds are the best that I have ever tried. Their response is amazing and gives you that crisp pop that I was looking for my jazz playing. Once you find the right size reed you will definitely really start to enjoy the advantages these reeds have.
