Rico Select Jazz Unfiled Tenor Saxophone ReedsThe Rico Select Jazz cut yields excellent projection and a clear, fat tone by virtue of its well-defined heart and longer vamp. Other characteristics of this reed are its great flexibility and fast response. This reed is available with or without a French file (please note, this item listing is for the unfiled verson). The debate rages on in saxophone forums all across the web. Filed, or unfiled? The conventional wisdom is that the unfiled are a little less bright, but that they can be pushed to achieve the brightness they fail to display right out of the gate. As to whether that charactersitic is an attribute or a detriment, or as to whether that is even an accurate characterization is ultimately up to the individual player. Maybe it's worth rolling the dice and getting a box, just in case the unfiled sound and feel is exactly what you're looking for.

I've gotta say that these reeds are amazing. After using Vandoren ZZs and V16s, these were a breath of fresh air. The consistancy in the cane is just great and I hardly ever have any problems with these in regards to warping (once they settle after a week or two). Balance is never an issue with these reeds. As for tone, there aren't many better! These reeds will give you a very well-rounded sound throughout the range of the horn. The unfiled are definitely darker and perhaps a little more "husky" sounding than the filed. The only other reed that comes close to these are the Alexander DC reeds. Other than that, there's no competition.
I've tried many reeds on my Selmer III tenor. This reed plays well--crisp and with depth--in all registers. The Series III can sound too bright and thin in the upper register, but this reed plays with enough weight in the upper tones and sounds terrific down low. A great reed that doesn't sacrifice any needed characteristic for jazz (with) high quality control and consistency. I recommend the 3S and 3M unfiled for jazz.
These reeds are the ones for me. After years of playing the filed reeds of the same name, I tried these only because that's all the store had left. I'll never change back. Every review on here is spot-on correct.
I first tried these reeds when Jerry Bergonzi gave a clinic at Berklee, and he was sponsored by Rico so he gave out a bunch of Rico stuff, including these reeds. I've never switched back to Vandoren. The only competition to these reeds is Alexander DC, but they take so long to prep I find these to be much less of a hassle. They are very consistent, and offer a nice, even tone throughout the ranch of the saxophone.
These reeds make playing saxophone seem easy. I was playing on Vandoren ZZ or Java but they never did feel right and I could only find a good one every now and then. With these Rico's I only find a BAD one every now and then. The strengths are very consistent from reed to reed and they sound GREAT. There's a lot more depth and richness in these. My only gripe is they don't all last as long as a good Vandoren. I usually practice about 4 hours a day so they're all on there alot - when I find a good one it may only get 6 weeks in a rotation before it has me sounding like a kazoo. But I can deal with that because the sound, feel, and quality of these reeds is unsurpassed in my mind.
