Best Uses

Comments about Robert Vinson Equatone Ligatures:

It's a novel idea as are the many other similar ligatures without rubber stretching ability, however, it is of my opinion following my experience with it, that being made of rubber is actually a disadvantage. I found that after tightening it was too easy to displace the reed. I also had difficulty seating the reed straight on some of my mouthpieces; in some instances the reed would slant at an angle to either side of the table and had to be held firmly in place until the ligature was tightened. Since at rest before tightening the reed would be slanted, it was easy to displace it while inserting the mouthpiece on the sax neck if not careful to avoid applying any pressure on the ligature. That created a good bit of frustration after taking time and care to perfectly seat the reed before inserting the mpc on the neck. The ligature also has molded rails apparently to help center the reed which I believe actually add to the problem of keeping the reed in position.

The molded rails may interfere with the amount of pressure applied to the reed. I use synthetic reeds, some of which have a smaller body than traditional cane reeds which themselves are not always symmetrical if you look at the butt end. As a result, my Legere' reed was easier to move after the ligature was tightened than my Fibracell reed. I would prefer the basic traditional, metal, two screw ligature over the Equa-Tone 10 out of 10 times. I play alto and have for about 30 years. I thought I'd try something different. The Equa-Tone did not work for me. I attached an image below to show the molded rails I referred to which would probably work best for a reed of specific width and thickness, otherwise I feel they should be removed for improvement.

    Great Response

Comments about Robert Vinson Equatone Ligatures:

This is a great ligature for the price! I find it enhances reed vibration, rather than restricts it. The screw is precise (unlike many others I've tried, that are either too tight or too loose) so, you have the ability to secure the reed without making it too tight and constricting vibration. I think this is particularly important for new players who may not have a well developed embouchure but, still need the reed to jump when it's blown on. The only negative (which didn't seem to effect the sound much) is, the synthetic material is stiff so, when new, the ligature didn't completely seal around the mouthpiece.

    Great sound, great value

Comments about Robert Vinson Equatone Ligatures:

I purchased one of these on the advice from a colleague and I must say that it is hands down the best ligature I've used on Alto. Currently I am using it on my 5A18M Gregory of Hollywood but have tried it on my Steve Broudus, and Meyer 5MM mouthpieces. The results are the same, I get a quick response through the whole range of the horn and my altissimo is easier. I've tried other ligatures like Brancher, FL, and a slew of Rovners; they all have there merits but this one had a bigger impact on my ease and comfort of playing. I highly recommend this ligature not only for its value but for its quality as well.
