Rovner Dark Bb Clarinet Ligature and CapRovner ligatures feature a double-textured body with new T-Process polymer impregnation that permits the reed to vibrate more freely than with conventional metal ligatures. Fitted with corrosion-resistant metal fittings, the unique design allows reed to swell and shrink without distorting the reed body, reducing the likelihood of leakage at the facing, and peculiar modes of vibration that give rise to uneven scales, poor intonation, squeaks and raspiness. The Dark Series Ligatures assist in producing a full, centered tone comparable to that of the old string technology. Classical performers especially enjoy the warm sound.

I bought a Rovner Dark-3R ligature a few months ago, and WOW, has this product changed my playing. This ligature has given me a nice, focused, dark tone, perfect for Concert Band. Don't get me wrong though, this is a great ligature for Jazz/Funk groups as well. I will never use metal ligatures again!
I recommend this to students in middle school who want to make their sound a little darker and richer. My high school band director preferred this as the "standard" ligature for the clarinet section, I disagreed. It's an inexpensive upgrade from a plain/generic metal ligature that I would recommend for any beginner.
When I first started playing, I used a standard metal ligature. After a year, I switched to this ligature and noticed an improvement in my sound. When I moved on to high school, I noticed my sound was a lot worse than my two section leaders. I noticed that they were using a Vandoren Optimum. I asked one of them if I could play on it for a little bit, and when I did, I noticed my sound was a lot better. It was a bigger jump in my sound then when I switched to the Rovner Dark. I recommend that if you are looking for a ligature that sounds decent at a low price, then get this. If you're looking to get a great sound for high school, get a Vandoren.
I've played on a lot of ligatures before. I firsted started out on a standard metal lig, then switched to this. I later tried the Vandoren Optimum, which belonged to a close friend of mine, and the Optimum was better in every way. I tried another Rovner lig as well, the Versa, and it's a very close second to the Optimum. It does give a dark sound, but it's so muffled and unresponsive that I couldn't stand it. I had a much darker sound and a lot less resistance on both the Optimum and Versa. It is better than standard metal ligs, and for $20, it's ok, but I'd much rather play on a lig that uses a pressure plate instead. Save your money.
I tried out the Rovner dark lig about two years ago when a friend recommended them to me. Wow! Immediately my tone got a lot warmer; less reedy. Not only is it easier to get a good tone both on sax and clarinet but you get less squeeking and you can really reach those low sub tones, especially on tenor. I use Rovner ligs, Russeau mouthpieces, and Vandoren reeds on all my horns, and people are always impressed with the mellow tones they produce. These ligs make switching from jazz to classical a lot easier, too- no need for a seperate jazz ligature and mouthpiece here. Overall, a highly flexible ligature.
