With the right combination, this ligature produces a great tone and easy response. However, most of the combinations sound very similar, and I find that only two or three distinct tones are produced instead of six. Overall, it's an okay ligature, but not worth what it's sold for. One thing to note is that the completely flat plate produces a brighter, thin tone, while the angled plate has a darker, fuller tone.
So I recently got this ligature a little bit ago. I really like it better than my other rovner dark ligature (which was a great step up from a metal one). But after using the versa, i noticed a huge difference. The tone was absolutely amazing and it was much easier to switch between octaves and and over high C was way easier to get out. I would recommend this to anyone who is looking for a new ligature. Also, i noticed that there are some tonal differences between switching plates but not much.
I own three Rovner ligatures: Dark, Mark III and the Versa. Without question, the Versa is the best of the bunch and a standout performer. While the other two are good ligatures, the Versa is much more responsive (especially when playing higher notes) and helps me achieve a warmer sound, without sounding flat. In my opinion, even though the Versa costs more than other models, it is a good investment for students and hobbyist because it really boosts your clarinets performance. FYI: I play a Leblanc Bliss (LB210, wood) and use Rico Reserve Classic #3 reeds.
