I have two of these ligatures, one for my tenor and one for my alto. I wouldn't say the ligature offers six actual tonal distinctions though there are six configurations that can be used. But it DOES clearly have great flexibility. Depending on the arrangement of the elements of the ligature, you can get anything from a bright, bold sound to a darker, more muted tone. I play a wide variety of music, from jazz to classical, and I can play nearly everything I want with this ligature. I especially like the darkest "setting" (with the heavier pressure plate isolated by the fabric) for some classical pieces when I want a broader tone and minimal "buzz". A great piece of equipment and one that has floated to the top of my personal choices.
The Versa lig proves to be a worthy successor to its predecessor, the Eddie Daniels lig. Naturally skeptical, I was not ready to accept this rather pricey item hands down, but I was knocked off my socks after testing. I have one for my Bb clarinet and my three saxes, tenor, alto, and soprano. The full tonal range is enhanced from subtone to altissimo, and better than any previous Rovner lig (I have tried them all, a fan of Rovner for 35 years). Playing altissimo consistently well has always been a challenge and this lig has given me a big boost. Go to the Rovner website to match the right lig model with your mouthpiece because the catalog listing doesn't help much.
I bought this ligature because my old ligature was making my horn respond less quickly, which 2 years of rigorous activity (Marching Band, Concert band, etc.) can do to pretty much any leather ligature, and this problem was getting worse every day, to the point where this was a do-or-die... It was a GREAT choice, and i don't regret it, because I love this Lig! i usually use the thick, bent insert for concert and marching band, and it works great, excelling in tone quality, increased responsivness, and a wider range of volume. I now have the best tone quality I've had in my 3 most important years playing the sax!
I bought one of these for my RPC 125B tenor mouthpiece. That piece is a powerhouse on its own, but depending on the reed, sometimes it can get a bit spread sounding. I picked one of these up despite not liking any other Rovners, and I am glad I did. With the flaps tucked beneath the metal rails, you get maximum brightness and focus. With the flaps cover over the metal rails, you get a huge sound that is a bit warmer and very focused. This is a great ligature for hard rubber pieces regardless of whether you want them to be a bit brighter or darker.
I recently purchased one of these based on my favorable experience with the clarinet model. Sound emission and response is much better with this ligature. I use the thicker plate with the flaps tucked in for the best projection and response. The sound is not subdued as it can be with the rovner "dark" fabric ligature. I still use the "dark" model on my alto setup to take some brightness out of the newer horn. However, for tenor, the Versa is the way to go.
