Having used Runyon Tenor pieces in the past, I was very excited to see what this mouthpiece could do when it finally arrived. My first impression of the piece was met with disappointment when I could not use my favorite ligature: an inverted nickel Bonade. This mouthpiece circumference is so small that the Bonade ligature can not be adjusted enough to even touch the reed. After settling on the provided ligature, I typically found the mouthpiece to be too bright for my needs both with and without the spoiler. I might still recommend this mouthpiece for Jazz/Pop work but not for Classical/Orchestral work.
I'd been playing an H. Ferriss 7 for twenty years; it's similar to a '70s vintage Meyer, but a bit edgier. In recent years I've had a terrible time finding reeds, so I thought it might help to change mouthpieces. I tried many different kinds, but always came back to the Ferriss. I ordered this Runyon on a whim, and I must say, I'm thrilled with it. The response is terrific--I can slap on a LaVoz medium soft and more often than not, it plays, whereas before I would go through boxes and boxes of D.C. Superials just to find a single reed that worked. So I'm saving money on reeds, and getting the sound I want. I like the Spoiler; it gets great projection but is not Lakey-like edgy, if you know what I mean. Without the spoiler the sounds warmer, but still big. Everyone is different when it comes to mouthpieces, but this baby works for me.
I stumbled upon the reviews of the Runyon Custom from fellow saxophone players on a forum I belong to. Many of them praised it as a ?professional mouthpiece without the professional price.? After reading numerous of these reviews, I purchased one from wwbw.com. When the mouthpiece arrived, I was shocked to see how small it was compared to my other mouthpieces! I rechecked the box to make sure it was a mouthpiece for the soprano saxophone, and clearly enough, it was. As I carefully examined the mouthpiece, I noticed the famous ?spoiler?, a little, but neat device that creates an ?edgy? tone and increases the volume by at least 20%. After checking it thoroughly, I began my usual practice. With the spoiler on, I was simply in awe of its bright, edgy nature, which reminded me of more expensive brands as Dukoff and Ottolink. Without the spoiler, the mouthpiece sounded like my Vandoren S35, which too was bright, but possessed a warm, rich tone. Overall, I really liked the Runyon Custom. In addition to giving a beautiful tone, I really loved the customization it offered. If you want to have an edgy tone, all you need to do is put in the spoiler. On the (other) hand, if you want a bright, but rich tone, then taking out the spoiler would be your option. In short, purchasing this mouthpiece is like buying two professional mouthpieces for the price of one!
Pair this mouthpiece with a Rovner ligature and you have an extremely versatile rich sounding mouthpiece. From classical to jazz this mouthpiece performs flawlessly providing warmth and just the right amount of edge. With the provided spoiler you can really project. For the price this is a tough piece to beat.
