As of late I have been on a quest to find a mouthpiece that will give me a full, warm, bright meaty sound with a little edge. My mission began when I went back (after 20 years) to a hard rubber Beechler mouthpiece on my alto and was absolutely thrilled with the quality of my sound. Until the switch, I was playing a metal mouthpiece just like I play on my tenor and soprano. And with all of the metal pieces I noticed they shared similar characteristics such as, a bit pitchy, a little thin and with more edge than I really cared for. Plus all of my metal mouthpieces cost hundreds of dollars more than the simple hard rubber mouthpiece that gave me the sound that I have been seeking for so many years. I figured that since the hard rubber Beechler worked on my alto then I would have the same fantastic results using a hard rubber Beechler on my tenor. Well, I was wrong. I knew what I wanted and I knew that a mouthpiece had to be out there that could give me the same results I had with my alto. After much research and speaking with James, the saxophone specialist at wwbw, we quickly narrowed it down to a few hard rubber mouthpieces that just might be the ticket. What I really think was great about James was that he was not trying to sell me the most expensive mouthpiece, but rather the one that he felt truly met my needs. I ended up choosing the Runyon Custom Spoiler Tenor saxophone mouthpiece. I was hesitant based upon the price alone. I figured how good can it be if it only cost $75? I mean this $75 synthetic mouthpiece is going to sound better and replace my $350 metal mouthpiece? Come on!! Well after James backed up his recommedation with facts, customer feedback and his own personal and professional opinions, I figured why not try it? If I did not like it, wwbw takes it back without any hassle. They guarantee the lowest price and if I found it elsewhere any cheaper, they have no problem making the adjustment. Plus, wwbw had/has a promotion going on in which if I bought this mouthpiece, I got a free gift, an Oleg Olegature ligature worth $79. That's right, I got a ligature that cost more than the mouthpiece...for free! Better yet, I was told it would take about a week to get to me. It only took two days!! After blowing the first note I knew that this mouthpiece was a keeper. What a wonderful sound!! In tune, wonderful undertones and just the right amount of edge. I have NEVER played a mouthpiece in which the altissimo came so freely, cleary and in tune. From a whisper to a scream, just a wonderful, wonderful mouthpiece!! This $75 mouthpiece just replaced my $350 metal. I am so thrilled with this purchase! I found my sound and it all hinged on this inexpensive yet priceless mouthpiece. The other reviews of this mouthpiece greatly influenced me in my purchase as well especially when considering the experience level of the other saxophonists. All three reviews were from clearly experienced players praising Santy Runyon's mouthpiece. And they could not have been more on target! Add my name to the list of believers in this wonderful mouthpiece. The ligature that it comes with is pretty cheap so you might want to get a better one. But if you buy now, you get the Oleg Olegature ligature for free!! Truly one of the best purchases I have ever made and the professionals at wwbw could not have been any more helpful. Another great experience with wwbw!
when i played on this mouthpiece with the spoiler in it was great and bright for a lead tenor, combo, or soloist. Also when i played with it out it sounded like it would fit in a jazz sax section or could be an awesome lead tenor. But in order to get these mouthpieces to work you need to push lots of air a.k.a. air support but that is with every jazz mouthpiece for all saxophones. So in the long run it can get you far for a cheaper jazz mouthpiece.
For my alto and my tenor I have Runyon Custom Spoilers among the mouthpieces I use. They give you a wonderful tone. They can sound bright, dark or in-between. They are amazing for the price and amazing- period. One of the mouthpieces for my soprano is a Jody Jazz composite (which plays great). They are souped-up versions of Runyons with spoilers.
WOW! I thought my BARI 8* metal was powerful - this Runyon hard rubber (9) blows it away. The altissimo is loud and easy to hit. The bottom is full and clear. I can play Coltrane, Getz, Menza, Pickett, etc. This ease of expression. I may just go back to hard rubber after using this mouthpiece. Unbelievable sound on my Conn 10M and it makes my Marcus Martini sound like my Yanigasawa 991B.
I've heard of Runyon pieces for years and tried many other pieces, but I've never tried Runyon. I saw some of the cool colors of the Custom Acrylic/Rubber. I decided to give it a try. Besides, I wouldn't be losing much money if it didn't pan out. I have to say that the Custom Series is to date, the best mouthpeice I've ever played on. This piece projects with or without the insert. I use a #12 (the widest opening they make) and a Rico plastic coated. On live gigs, I have to back away from the mike. This mouthpiece is great for low sesitive ballads too. There is lots of control from very loud to very soft. You can easily spend 4 times as much money on the others, but why? Runyon is the best kept secret in the industry. Take it from someone who has used very expensive pieces and that doesn't do half a good a job in performance like my Runyon Custom.
