Runyon Metal Spoiler Alto Saxophone MouthpieceThe latest in state of the art technology for reed instrument mouthpieces, the spoiler is a Runyon innovation that allows the musician to change the performance qualities of the mouthpiece.Runyon's Metal Mouthpieces have been a favorite among professional saxophonist for many years. In order to insure the proper flex modulus required for the saxophone tone, Runyon's Metal Mouthpieces are composed primarily of manganese and bronze. Many do not realize that the tone on reed instruments is produced not only by the primary vibrations of the reed, but also by the sympathetic vibrations of the mouthpiece itself. This is why the flex modulus is so critically important in determining the mouthpiece's soundRunyon's Metal Mouthpieces are plated with chromium which is the second hardest of all metallic elements. This chromium plating makes the mouthpieces smooth and durable, as well as less susceptible to scratching and disfigurement. Softer metallic plating materials such as nickel, gold, or silver are much more susceptible to nicks, scratches, and disfigurement. There is a common misconception, even among professional musicians, concerning mouthpiece materials. Many erroneously assume that softer substances, such as plastic or hard rubber, are capable of producing a darker, softer, or more mellow tone than that produced by metal mouthpieces. However, the darkness of the tone is due mainly to the size and dimensions of the tone chamber, not the mouthpiece material itself. The saxophone tone produced by all Runyon Metal Mouthpieces may be radically modified, even revolutionized, by the insertion of a "Spoiler". This insertable baffle, for example, will enable the player to increase the volume of the tone. The insertion of the spoiler will actually increase the volume by about forty percent. The spoiler's tone will have considerably more edge and brightness, rendering it much more suitable for the modern jazz and rock sounds. In order to approximate the tonal variety and varied volumetric power of Runyon Metal Mouthpieces with their optional patented Spoiler, it would be necessary for the saxophonist to use two different mouthpieces, each with a differentially-sized, built-in baffle. With Runyon Metal mouthpieces, with its insertable spoiler, the saxophonist needs only one mouthpiece, for he will have, in effect, two mouthpieces for the price of one.

This is a great product for the jazz player. It gives a much broader ad larger sound than a hard rubber mouthpiece, and is more durable, yet it can handle more air, and gives more control options to the advanced players. It is perfect for the lead alto player who wants to be heard, or the small combo player who is looking for a brighter sound. It can handle more air than other mouthpieces, so during a solo, you can really blow. After playing my first show with it, the director pulled me aside with a smile and said, "Big fat sound!" If you are looking for a mouthpiece that will give you a bigger, brighter sound, this is it. However, the standard metal ligature that they send it with tends to slip after a while if it isn't tightened hard, so go for the one-piece rubber or cloth ligature on this model. The baffle works surprisingly well, too, and gives you a very different sound. I like this mouthpiece a lot, with or without the baffle. It is definitely a good buy!
I would have thought that this piece would cost more, this piece is great especially step up with my Allora 869 "big boss" alto. The spoiler mechanism is very awesome when you are in a big group and want to be heard, but it may take getting used to the spoiler, the few times I played with the spoiler the sound would end with a squeak when I stop playing. Without the spoiler, the mouthpiece still sounds very jazzy and bright and this mouthpiece and take huge amounts of air to. The only downside is that the ligature comes off when you try to remove the mouthpiece but that is a simple change you can make, besides that, I recommend this mouthpiece to anybody. P.S. I have the #7.
I have tried a lot of alto metal mouthpieces. I can save you a lot of time and effort. Buy this mouthpiece with a #2 fibracell reed and you will thank me for my direction. Every musician should own this set up. Jody might think his deal is the best, but if you order both of these and do a Pepsi challenge you will understand why I am telling you not to waste your time. This combination with their metal ligature will send you to another planet. I guarantee. I own a #6 but if I could do it again I would have only bought the #5. Frazier
I bought my first Santy Runyon alto saxophone mouthpiece about 4 years ago from WWBW. I had tried around 10 different brands and styles of mouthpieces and after playing their #6 and #7 and decided on the #6. I liked the sound a lot even though I was not aware of how great playing a D could feel and sound. I love playing the saxophone. One day while I was talking to a customer service representative at WWBW the rep told me about the Rousseau #7 so I ordered one. When I began playing that mouthpiece, the feel and sound with the D was incredible. I was amazed at the quality of sound that mouthpiece had; a little creamy without any sound of air, very clear and solid. One day I called Santy Runyon to ask a question about the spoiler that comes with their mouthpiece. I got into a conversation with one of their workers at customer service and he said he loved his #5 Santy Runyon with the spoiler. The volume is good and all the notes play great. When I received the mouthpiece I took it out of the box and started playing. I couldn't put my alto down. I must say this is the finest sounding alto mouthpiece on the market period. If you try the #5 Santy Runyon alto mouthpiece, you will not have to look for another one.
If you want to really put out the sound and be heard...this is the mouth piece for you. This thing is BRIGHT, LOUD, AND OBNOXIOUS!!! While being all of those...which most people usually associate with being bad or a sign of an immature musician...think again. This mouth piece although being all of the above, still sounds great. I haven't had a chance to obtain the spoiler which Runyon says will increase volume by 40% but I would really like to try one. Another added feature is since the mouth piece is chromium, it looks soooo sweet.
