I have had this case for years, all through conservatory, on the road and even on my post-college backpack across Europe trip. The really amazing part is that last one -- I travelled on public transportation only - bus, subway, planes etc.. and stayed in youth hostels -- basically I was all over the place with this thing and it got a beating and carried everywhere! My sax made it back state-side not needing any work and sealing great.
Previously another case left my other sax's body tube bent... I won't go with anything else but SKB..
I had this case for a while on some crappy tenor I had and then got my Reference 54 and decided this case was good. I just sent that sax off to be set up and it turns out the case had bent the bell! My low end was totally screwed. The case is nice and light, holds all my stuff well but messin' with my sax is unacceptable. Go for the Bam
I got this case in 2001, and after 10 years, it is in need of replacement. I haven't been too tough on it (no car accidents or Europe trips here), but the plastic is cracking and it no longer aligns correctly when closing. For the price, it should be constructed better than that. I am a multi-instrumentalist and I have cheaper cases that have lasted far longer. I do not recommend.
In an auto accident, my trunk opened and my sax went flying! I found it in the middle of the intersection, about 20 yards from my car.The SKB case did its job extremely well, the horn suffered only minimal damage: the left hand keys controlling low Bb, B, and C were out of whack, but the rest of the horn was fine. The case itself didn't fare so well, but like I said, it did its job: I'd much rather be buying a new case, than be trying to replace my priceless early Mark VI tenor!
I own the case for around 5-6 years and only year ago after checking it in it came out with crack in the top area. But I flew trans Atlantic and it saved the horn, soo... Everything you will read about it, all the positive comments and reviews on this site are true. Once I burned a hole in it and was able to fill it in with epoxy. It looks shabby now but I don't think there are official representatives of SKB in Russia so I keep using it. Very well worth buying.
