I have had this case for years, all through conservatory, on the road and even on my post-college backpack across Europe trip. The really amazing part is that last one -- I travelled on public transportation only - bus, subway, planes etc.. and stayed in youth hostels -- basically I was all over the place with this thing and it got a beating and carried everywhere! My sax made it back state-side not needing any work and sealing great. Previously another case left my other sax's body tube bent... I won't go with anything else but SKB..
The SKB-150 Tenor Sax case is working well for commuting via bus - SF Muni. I was able to sit on a seat with narrower space with this case, while with other cases, such as Protec, are too wide and too uniform in shape. Also, the case is easier to handle in a crowd because it's lighter, more compact and well balanced - using the handle. As far as walking, I found that it was much more comfortable carrying this case than carrying my Protec by hand. The SKB-150 weighs about 5.1 lbs by itself and with my Selmer Mark VII, weighs just under 14 lbs. My Protec weights just over 6 lbs but usually with my sax and accessories, it weights over 16 lbs, which seems to go over a threshold for me. I do use my Protec as a backpack and that's great. However, the trade-off of that is that it works better to put more things into the case's pouches so that that's the only thing I'm commuting with. However, although the lack of accessory space in the SKB seems like a downside, I can easily carry that case while wearing a small backup with more accessories - like a sax stand, method books, etc... that wouldn't fit into my backpack-able Protec case. And distributing the weight has proven to work well with the commuting I do. As well as being lighter, more compact and providing me more flexibility, this case is well constructed. So, my sax is really safe during my commute. I do take care just the same, but its nice knowing my horn is well protected. I bought the optional strap as well. I haven't used it much, because it hasn't seemed necessary yet. But it's comfortable and I like the option to use it. The small bag for the sax neck that goes into the bell is well made too. It's soft and padded enough to where the neck is safe and so is the inside of my bell. I prefer to not put my metal mouthpiece in there as well, though. So, I'm glad I bought this case.
I have had this case for years and it has been amazing!! Trekked across Europe on public transportation, all through school and many flights.. I've even CHECKED it under the plane once! dun dun daaaa... the sax was fine on the other end! After dragging this thing all over the place and my sax is good to go and all the pads still seal great??? you can't ask for much more. I previously used another brand of case, shaped and hard. My body tube around the upper stack was bent from not protecting or fitting properly (selmer) so now with flawless protection from SKB I won't go with anything else!!!
In an auto accident, my trunk opened and my sax went flying! I found it in the middle of the intersection, about 20 yards from my car.The SKB case did its job extremely well, the horn suffered only minimal damage: the left hand keys controlling low Bb, B, and C were out of whack, but the rest of the horn was fine. The case itself didn't fare so well, but like I said, it did its job: I'd much rather be buying a new case, than be trying to replace my priceless early Mark VI tenor!
I got this case in 2001, and after 10 years, it is in need of replacement. I haven't been too tough on it (no car accidents or Europe trips here), but the plastic is cracking and it no longer aligns correctly when closing. For the price, it should be constructed better than that. I am a multi-instrumentalist and I have cheaper cases that have lasted far longer. I do not recommend.
