Schecter Guitar Research Hellcat VI Electric GuitarNot a guitar, bass, or even a baritone in today's terms, the Hellcat VI (six!) is designed to be an improvement of the 6-string bass instrument of the early 1960s. With a 30" scale, the Hellcat VI is standard tuned, but one octave below a normal guitar. String gauges range from .025 to .095. comes with Seymour Duncan SJAG-1 pickups.Seymour Duncan SJAG-1Every detail in sound, construction, and appearance is faithfully duplicated in this vintage pickup. Even the original hand grinding process is used on the magnetic pole pieces. The result is that classic '60s sound. Middle pickup is reverse wound, reverse polarity ("RW/RP") to create a hum canceling effect when used together with the bridge or neck pickup.Case sold separately.

This is not an instrument for anybody looking for a guitar OR a bass outright. it truly is an entity unto itself. the tonal versatility of the hellcat VI is broader than almost any guitar or bass instrument I have encountered. each of the three pickups has it's own personality, capable of any tone between a thinner but more melancholy bass to an aggressively shiny yet pretty guitar. the coil tapping is integral to this instruments tones. if you order it, don't shy from this feature. it functions as a fairly subtle high pass filter, impacting the volume and tone in equal parts (think fender's "S-1" switching).
in general I would recommend this instrument to bassists looking both to play more melodically/chordally, or guitarists looking for more low range while still trying to play in melodic fashion. (I came upon looking for this instrument when I realized that I wanted to go lower when playing along with a piano in B minor.)
Warning: this is not a riffing guitar, nor is it a full sounding bass. it is the step in between. a viola for guitars, so to speak. expect that and you will be rewarded tenfold.
