Scherzer Meister Johannes Rotary Valve Piccolo Trumpet
Meister Johannes Scherzer Trumpets are handcrafted instruments manufactured in the tradition and experience, based on centuries of music instrument making. Scherzer piccolo trumpets have a sound like no other. Because of the rotary valves, they have almost a "Piccolo sound with out the edge." Also the short throw of the rotary valves allows for speed that is unmatched. Includes case and mouthpiece.

This rotary piccolo trumpet comes standard with four mouthpipes, 1-A and 3-Bb. The A mouthpipe is the standard which is used for converting the instrument to the key of A. The variations of the 3-Bb mouthpipes deals with the resistance that each pipe can give a player. The decorative rings on the mouthpiece receiver specify the tapers of the mouthpipes: I (M), II (ML), III (L). The I pipe has a tight taper which will give the most resistance. This will allow a player to create a very bright sound and also it will help the high register speak more clearly. The II pipe has a standard, more common taper which will help in all of the registers of the piccolo trumpet. The III pipe has a more open taper, which offers the least amount of resistance to a player. This pipe will create an open feel with a full rich sound.

This a very fine piccolo trumpet. Intonation is very good and the horn is easy to blow over it's entire range. I do find that I need to pull the 4th valve slide about 1/4 to 1/3 inch when I play in A. This horn gets a light clear sound and I have found it to be a great choice when working with a vocalist or a choir. Rotary valve horns in general seem to have softer attacks than piston horns which also makes them better in working with singers. The valves are great once you get used to the shorter stroke as opposed to pistons. Once they are broken in there isn't anything too technical for this horn, as long as you keep the valves linkage clean and well lubricated. The choice of 3 different B flat lead pipes is a great advantage, but I have found that I use the largest almost all of the time. I have found that I can over blow the horn on the smaller lead pipes if I really open up when doing a solo with organ or a brass ensemble. This is a great horn.
