Take it from me, I went through several horns on my return to playing. I finally ponied up and bought a Schilke B-1. There is nothing else like it, PERIOD! This is a very high quality horn. I played Taps on it in front of 35,000 people and it did not let me down...phenominal horn and worth EVERY single penny I spent.
I bought this horn in 1992. That summer I traveled to Woodwind Brasswind and spent over 4 hours trying various horns. The schilke B1 was the first one I tried, and I liked it. In this store though, with all the choices, I didn't want to buy the first one I tried, however I kept it next to me because it felt good. They brought me more, and more, and more, and more. One by one I sent them back. After playing nearly 30 different trumpets from probably 8-10 different manufacturers, I said I can't find anything that comes close to this one, the Schilke B1. From tone, to response, low register clarity, to high register ease and good air flow, great valve action and precision craftsmanship, this horn can't be beat! Since then numerous professional trumpet players I know and have worked with have tried my horn over the years as I told them this story. Not one disagreed. Several of them offered to buy it from me. I will never part with this horn.
After playing a Bach Strad (20+ years), a Kanstul, a Yamaha (briefly) and a Getzen (7 years), this Schilke B-2 Model is the superior horn.
The Bach seems to maybe have better overtones, but the valves were poor in that horn. Lots of problems. The Getzen was a solid horn with excellent valves. I didn't care for the Yamaha. It seemed to have a "stuffy" quality to it. The Kanstul horn was a good trumpet, but was heavy and the values seemed a bit slow.
The Schilke B-2 has a scintilating sound, especially from mid-C and on up. The horn slots great and is very bright and responsive. The valves are fast, smooth and quiet. The finish is very good. Overall, this is one awesome trumpet. It may cost a little more, but is truely worth the little extra to save towards!!
I have played horns over the years, Bach, Getzen and a Holton. However, the schilke trumpets are the most meticulously made instruments; very much like fine jewelery. The tone is very clear, the response is great, and the intonation is unreal. You can play a commercial mouthpiece for big band stuff, or use lets say a Bach5c and get a great sound for quintet. A Hidden Jewel~
Like many professional musicians, I've attended NAMM shows over the years and attempt to play everything out there. I always wanted to play a Schilke for more than a few minutes, so I bought two different models from WWBW to try for 45 days... thinking I would probably send them back.
For many years, I've owned a beautiful Bach Stradivarius 72 Star ML and a Yamaha Bobby Shew YTR-8310Z. I've been very happy with both of these fine horns... until I played the Schilke B2.
Wow, the B2 is an amazing sounding trumpet with dead-on intonation and it is exceptionally comfortable to play. For weeks, I played this horn side-by-side with my own two trumpets, as well as the new Schilke HC1.
As a jazz trumpeter who occasionally plays classical, I definitely prefer the sonic versatility and brilliance of the B2 model. Making music on this superb instrument is next to effortless. I'm so impressed with the Schilke product that I recently sold my other two trumpets and even bought the new Schilke flugelhorn -- which is equally as impressive.
The remarkable ease of playing these Schilke instruments allows me to focus on the music rather than on the effort of playing the notes. These are elegant horns that are truly a joy to play.
