Professional jazz and symphony musicians have long prized Schilke trumpets. To build on that rich tradition while pushing the envelope of brass instrument design, company owner Andrew Nauman envisioned making a trombone that would be completely designed and built in-house by Schilke. Starting in 2002, Schilke began working on the ST20, a trombone that from its inception was intended to be new and original.
The Schilke ST20 trombone, while drawing heavily on the Schilke manufacturing history and tradition of stringent quality control, adds new design features, most prominent of which is the trombone's innovative stainless steel axial valve rotor. The concept behind this valve is to give superior performance to a standard rotor valve while mimicking the feel of a straight tenor trombone.
In the past, valve-maintenance issues offset the performance advantage of an F-attachment trombone. By fitting a stainless steel axial valve with brass tubing, Schilke bypassed the shortcomings of brass or nickel-plated valves and created an trombone that produces a warm tonal quality with good projection, while being virtually maintenance-free.
The Schilke ST20 trombone's stainless-steel axial valve alone required 2 years of research and design. It's milled from a 2-1/2" stainless steel block down to a hollow cone with a precise weight and the proper feel. The axial-flow valve permits an even feel and response throughout all registers.
The large-bore Schilke ST20 trombone is well suited to playing in symphonic orchestras. Its .547" hand slides have chrome-plated inner tubes, yellow brass outer tubes, and nickel over-sleeves. Schilke hand slides are available with a choice of 2 different end-bow alloys (yellow brass or nickel) and bore styles (tenor or bass crook). The yellow brass end bows offer a warm, centered sound, while the nickel end bows present a more brilliant and articulate sound. The tenor crook lends itself to a more focused sound, whereas the bass crook will deliver a heavier, larger feel and sound.
The trombone's hand-hammered 8-1/2" bell is available in your choice of yellow or rose brass. Generally, a yellow brass bell provides a strong fundamental sound with clarity and consistent overtones throughout all dynamic levels. With its higher copper content, a rose brass bell provides a warm, rich sound and more freedom to color the sound.
Schilke accompanies each ST20 trombone with 3 interchangeable leadpipes and an embroidered case. The first leadpipe is optimized for a compact sound with very clear articulation, and it offers the most resistance. The standard leadpipe has a more open sound and clear articulation. The third leadpipe is the most open sounding and has a somewhat more covered articulation while offering the greatest resistance.
Four main tuning slide options include yellow brass round, rose brass round, yellow brass square, and rose brass square. Square-shaped tuning slides tend to play in a more compact and focused manner, while round tuning slides play more freely and yield a somewhat wider sound.
The choice of yellow or rose brass will affect your Schilke ST20 trombone's playing characteristics as well. Yellow brass is bright sounding and suitable for nearly all types of playing. Rose brass yields a darker tone, and is preferred for use in orchestral trombones or for soloists' instruments.
