Schilke Standard Large Shank Trombone Mouthpiece in SilverThe Schike large shank trombone mouthpiece is among the most popular, well-reviewed mouthpieces in the world. They fit commonly into what are sometimes called symphony tenors, that is to say horns with a .547" bore. These are also common in the band world, and are the most common size among orchestral players. Some jazzers use a big horn too. Bass bones, .560" bore like a Bach 50, accept large shank mouthpieces as well.

The standard 6 1/2 AL mouthpiece distorted my sound when I tried to put too much air through the horn. I noticed that right away in the first couple of years I started playing trombone.
So I decided to get a Schilke 51D and it helped A LOT. With the slightly bigger rim and deeper cup I can put all the air I want into my trombone without worrying about cracking notes. It also made my tone much more pleasing. I was actually surprised how much I improved just by switching to a bigger mouthpiece.
If you have the same problem as I had, I suggest getting a 51D. It can also be a good transitional mouthpiece between the tenor and bass trombone to get you started on your lower range.
i have been playing euphonium for about 6 years going on 7. i am in the 11th grade. i started playing on a schilke 51c4
at the end of my 9th grade year, i had to do more with my face at first but after about 2 days it gave me more flexibility and a much more darker tone , then someone told me to try out the 51d, and i use the 51d of my marching euphonium cuz it give the euphonium a euphonium sound and not a baritone voice . over all the 51c4 and the 51d are outstanding works out art :D . >>> sam brown
I bought the Schilke 53 and my flexibility is much better along with my tone and stamina at the end of the day. It's really a comfortable mouthpiece.
I have the Schilke 51 and it gives me a very warm rich tone in the bottom end. I play Tuba as well. The broad rim and deep cup are a perfect match for me.
I bought the Schilke 58 bass trombone mouthpiece two months ago, and it is an amazing mouthpiece. I am primarily a tuba player, but have found that the large cup helps to give my playing the darker sound, on my smaller Eb tuba and my trombone, that I get out of my large tuba. I instantly fell in love with the mouthpiece and proceeded to buy one for my large horn. And, I would have to say that, if you are looking for a mouthpiece that is worth every penny that you are spending on it, then a Schilke mouthpiece is what you want.
