As with most looking to buy a new guitar, you usually make many trips to your local music shop, to find that "one". I had always heard good, no great, things about Seagull acoustics. But honestly never really gave them a shot. My budget was around $400. But that wasn't in my mind when I choosing the guitar, because I wasn't going to settle for something that I felt was just "okay". The Yamaha's just didn't sound full nor loud enough for me. Some of the Epiphone's were "okay" but seemed overpriced, like the Epi Hummingbird. A lot of the acoustics in this price range looked good cosmetically but lacked good definition, resonance, and tone. Their sound being dulled by a thick poly finish and sub par bracing. With their Gibson styled creme binding and thin sound. I kept wondering if there is hope. Then I picked up the Seagull S6 original, and immediately knew this guitar was different from the others. It projected the tone similar to me of that of a guitar 2-3 times the price. The solid cedar top sounded flawless. It has a crisp clean resonance that echoes throughout with the longest sustain I have heard in a guitar. Everything little detail is heard, great for finger picking. The wide nut width felt good to my finger tips. A thing I must add is that sure the S6 demo sounded good, but after I got home and tuned up my brand new one out of the box. I was actually speechless. Probably due to the new strings, mine at home sounded so much better. The guitar is also very loud. The cedar top has a balanced yet mellow tone to it, and still lets the highs cut through and shine. I am enjoying the solid cedar top and someday, when I get a Martin, I will then own a spruce top as well. I actually was up for hours wondering how they could pull off this guitar for the price. And I was so happy that I did not settle for an asian made guitar for around the same amount of money. This was made in Canada by Godin guitars. It was properly set up, and even comes from Godin with a TUSQ nut. The satin finish was flawless and the grain on the wood was astounding for this price. It was a work of art, true craftsmanship can be had even today, and not cost you $2,000. These guys definitely take what they do seriously and are good at it. Mine came with a red tortoise shell pick guard that I think looks great on the S6. Proper paperwork, inspection check list, booklet containing helpful information on caring for the guitar and a truss rod wrench. I highly recommend this guitar, and at this price, I even recommend it to entry level players.
