Having tried quite a few Selmer clarinet mouthpieces and finding most difficult to play at best, I was not expecting anything special with the C85 120. Every now and then I go into experimental mode and try out a few mouthpieces at a time. I have been playing a Portnoy BP03 with a Mitchel Lurie 3 1/2 on a Selmer Series 9 for the past few years and have been more than satisfied with the ease of sound production and volume but have been missing that extra sweetness or "Ooooo factor" as I call it. Well much to my surprise, the C85 120 has it. The "round" and "sweet" is there and it is easy to blow with a bit of resistance on my Series 9 with a Mitchel Lurie 3 reed. There is also plenty of volume available and it seems very consistent throughout the range of my clarinet. I find this piece head and shoulders above the famous "V" brand mass-produced open chamber mouthpieces. Of course your results may vary depending on your clarinet but it works and sounds great on my big-bore Selmer. Give it a try. The manufacturer description is surprisingly accurate on this one!
For quite a few years I played a Charles Bay (Kasper copy med open/med) mouthpiece. About a year ago I purchased a new Buffet R-13 clarinet and the old Kasper was very problematic in pitchiness. I tried a number of mouthpieces in my collection and was fairly satisfied with an old Selmer HS** (still, however, a little pitchy, especially open G requiring a lot of lipping). I tried the Selmer C85 120 based on the manufacturers claim and the one posted review. I just received the mouthpiece and am blown away. The pitch problems have vanished. The dynamic range is unbelievable. Tone control is great over the entire dynamic range. I love it. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend you try it. It may be an especially good choice for those of you that also play saxophone due to its flexibility and ease of control.
I've been using this mouthpiece for about 2 months now i believe. At first I refused to write a review on this web site, because this mouthpiece was amazing, and I didn't want anybody to sound like me by using this mpc. I've tried so many different mpcs before I bought this one, including all Vandorens and others, and it really is hard to find a mpc this good. I found that I was able to produce a dark rich tone, and the fast staccatos sounded much less aggressive. This was what I was really looking for in this mpc, because the mpc I had previously frustrated me immensely while I was playing the Concerto for Clarinet by Mozart. I strongly recommend this mpc to anyone. Though this mpc can be a little bit bright, it really depends on what kind of reed you are using. This one goes perfect with Vandoren V12 3+1/2s.
I recently purchased a C85 120 after an evaluation against a Selmer crystal. I have used a Selmer HS** for many years and I was impressed with the projection and clarity of the sound produced by the C85. There is a marked stability of all of the notes throughout the range of the horn and it is significantly easier to blow into. I would certainly recommend the C85 to anyone looking for an expressive improvement from the mouthpiece that they currently use.
