I have played Alto and Tenor for most of my life and decided to get seriously into Soprano because it can make sounds that I want that the others can't. However, with all the same moving parts being smaller and closer together, it becomes a more difficult instrument to play, keep in tune, repair, etc. The smaller and more compressed the instrument (such is the Soprano compared to the other horns), the more temperamental and complicated it is in every way. At no point does this become more evident than when it comes time to undergo the inevitable search for the perfect mouthpiece. A smaller, highly complicated instrument which has to be in absolute pristine alignment at all times requires a very small, extremely well-made mouthpiece that can keep up with it. All of the mouthpieces that I have tried have been off just a little bit and "just a little bit" can make or break the smooth and exacting sound that only a Soprano can provide. I was no doubt feeling a sense of restriction and frustration in my sound until...
I play mine (C* metal) on a 1st series IW-601GL with Vandoren V-16 2-1/2's. My Soprano mouthpiece search is over and I'm set for the rest of my life with this one. My hat's off to Selmer for doing it again with yet another perfect example of how it's done and done right.
I have had the C* model of this mouthpiece for about three years. Since its purchase it has met my demands exceptionally well and I have had few complaints. John Coltrane used this mouthpiece--the E facing--on several of his recordings. This is, aside from the new super session, one of the last selmer mouthpieces with a round chamber design. I use this mouthpiece in my All-State-Champion jazz band as well as district and regional concert bands. My only complaint is that it is grossly out of tune when cold, but that's metal for you. I am looking to buy an E model just because the C* facing makes it a little difficult to blow over 10 screaming brass players.
It's hard to imagine a better soprano piece than this one. Intonation is spot on and the tonal flexibility is unreal. I could play any tone I want on this thing.
I have been playing on a Claude Lakey 6* mouthpiece for the past 10-years and I recieved a Selmer Classic Series mouthpieces as a Christmas present. I have the G-facing and it is far better in tone and ease of expression as compared to my Lakey. The Selmer Paris corporation says it's designed for Classical music, but I have found that it is extremely adaptable and perfect for Contemporary Jazz and R&B. It has a tone that is much warmer and far better at expression than my Lakey. It has a very beautiful design to it as well. I use Alexander Superial DC No.3's on my mouthpiece and it just makes my Cannonball Raven Soprano just sing!
