I feel this is a very good mouth piece for classical in larger ensembles. I found that it has excellent blending and found it very versatile. However, it sounded very stuffy in smaller groups or solo playing. I recommend it more for blending with larger ensembles, but not as much when it comes to small ensembles.
I have played on a variety of different mouthpieces that include the Otto Link metal, Selmer Soloist C*, generic WWBW Selmer C* copy, Selmer S80 C**, Morgan 5L, and a couple others. Of those several I mentioned, I did not like the WWBW generic at all, and did not like the Soloist C* too much more. The original Soloist was supposedly an excellent mouthpiece, but they apparently did not capture the magic in this reissue. Of all those I mentioned my favorite so far is the Larry Teal for my classical playing, though the Morgan and Link should not be compared because they are Jazz pieces. The LT provides, as described, the classic dark French sound I was looking for. It doesn't have mind-blowing projection of the Morgan, but that's not necessarily a negative. Overall, I prefer the LT over any other of the Selmer mouthpieces I have used, and it will probably become my standard piece. Beginner students: stick to the Selmer S80 C* while you are learning, and once you are acquainted with the instrument and want to shape your sound, explore other pieces. Keep the LT in mind.
This mouth piece has brought a new aura to my music. I can?t imagine this mouth piece with out a good leather ligature and a Vandorn reed but for jazz, marching band and classical this mouth piece just rox in every general direction.
