My high school owns this contra and I've been playing on it for 3 straight years now. All I can say is I will NEVER (God willing) play on any other contra EVER! The rosewood body has such a beautiful resonance to it. Throughout the entire range it sounds beautiful.
This is a fantastic instrument. It plays remarkably well in tune and is far superior to the Leblanc contra bass models. The keys are ergonomic, and it is an incredibly resonant instrument. It whispers when it needs to, but it can also single-handedly balance the low end of any musical ensemble.
I played a study on this contrabass clarinet for my doctorate recital, last year. The sound is wonderful: clear, crisp, in tune and powerful, all around (from high to low). The high notes (2 last octaves) take a bit of work to get easily, and so does the low notes. The high notes sometimes sound as if the instrument is all plunged up (until you get used to it). The low notes (Eb and lower, on the lowest octave) often sound too busy, cracking and unclear. Those notes need a lot of work. The middle register is wonderful; round, rich, powerful, easy, warm, or however you want it to be. Though it takes plenty of practice to make the instrument sound well, it is a wonderful, good looking instrument. But once you've got through the pain of trying to play the notes right, this instrument is a powerful, capable of anything in any style and amazing.
