Rich, warm tone

Comments about Selmer Paris Recital Model Bb Clarinet:

I've been playing a Bb Recital for more than 15 years. It's a very responsive horn that is very well made with top of the line wood, and beautifully constructed, and comfortable, keywork. Yes, it's much thicker and heavier than any other Bb clarinet available, but that's the trade off for the excellent tone and construction this instrument provides. I've played Buffett and Leblanc clarinets, and have enjoyed them, yet the Recital has something the other's can't touch.

Comments about Selmer Paris Recital Model Bb Clarinet:

i recently bought a selmer recital bb clarinet and the sound is amazing. i compared it to 3 buffet r13s and chose the selmer because of its deep, dark, compact sound. the intonation is also very good. my only complaint is that it is very heavy but it is built like a tank, so its a fair compromise. i am proud to say i play a selmer even in a section full of buffets and will always reccomend the recital to those needing a pro clarinet.

Best Clarinet I've Tried

Comments about Selmer Paris Recital Model Bb Clarinet:

I've played both Bb and A Selmer Recital clarinets for many years, and I have yet to play anything better. The tone is dark, lively, and well focused. It works well with practically any genre of music. The response is very fast: the slightest touch of the register key causes it to speak. The small bore makes it easy to fill. The intonation is spot on. The keywork is phenomenal - elegant and very comfortable. The way the fingers fit in the holes is alluring and unique. One possible issue is the weight - it's a very heavy instrument. So, I often use a neck strap when I play standing. Another issue is the original pochette case: there was no room for anything but the instrument, a box of cork grease, and a couple of reeds. I replaced it with a BAM Trekking style single case, and the double case that came with the Recital A clarinet. Overall, if you want a dark sound, the Recital is as good a clarinet as I've played.

A Marvelous Instrument

Comments about Selmer Paris Recital Model Bb Clarinet:

When I embarked on my quest for a new instrument, I tried everything I could get my hands on. This included the Leblanc line, the Buffet line, the Yamaha line and of course the Selmer line. At the end of the process the winner was the Recital. Even my instructor, a long time R-13 afficianado, admitted that the Recital had the qualities he looked for and complimented my choice. He specifically mentioned the Recital's abiility to project and of course the tone/sound (very warm/dark). Yes, the Recital is a bit heavier than a standard instrument, but I got used to it very quickly and I play the instrument without a neck strap. It's a great instrument and I love to play it !!

Selmer does it again... and again.... and AGAIN

Comments about Selmer Paris Recital Model Bb Clarinet:

This is a wonderful instrument. The intonation is great, with the dark sound as advertised. The beautiful wood is VERY well worked, and the key work is absolutely stunning. The clarinet in itself shows excellent craftsmanship. I have found the tone of the Recital to be incomparable to the Buffet R13. Not only does the Recital have a darker tone, but the build quality is definitely something special. The wood is much thicker to that of any other clarinet I have played, thus giving a "fat" and warm sound. When in rehearsals, the conductor would repeatedly need to tell me to quiet down because it has such amazing and brilliant sound projection! I also found the instrument to be very easy blowing (note: I am playing on an A. Giggliotti P facing mouthpiece) and even the highest of notes were a piece of cake to reach. The clarinet also seems to never be sharp or flat, but even if it is, the longer and shorter barrels will fix that easily, though some could argue that this is a result of the player not the instrument. The key work, as stated above, is stunning. It isn't even the actual keys either, although they are quite nice. The way the response and "handling" so to speak is superb and simply the best I have ever had the pleasure of encountering, whether the instrument is, Buffet, LeBlanc, or other. The French blue steel springs really do the trick. So anyway, I could ramble about this instrument for a very long time, but in short, if you are a Selmer aficionado or not, this is in my opinion simply the best choice.

Very comfortable and powerful

Comments about Selmer Paris Recital Model Bb Clarinet:

This is a clarinet that will project easily if you know how to center your sound, since the bore is smaller than average you will have to work less to focus your tone. The first thing I noticed when I bought this horn was its body design, it is about twice as thick in terms of volume, the body is very similar to the signature model but just thicker, you have more to hold onto. The key work is way beyond anything I've experienced and is more comfortable than the R13 keyword by quite a bit. The clarinet allows being flexible and subtle at low dynamic levels, but will also sing at f and ff dynamic levels. Just be aware and get used to the feel of the instrument, it is very different if you are coming from a Buffet clarinet. It would be good to have both the A and Bb recital clarinet if you need to switch often because it may be an uncomfortable switch if you have two different brands of clarinets. That is my only issue.

Amazing Dark Sound

Comments about Selmer Paris Recital Model Bb Clarinet:

The Selmer Recital is an amazing horn. ItÆs very heavy for its size which may detour some but its dark warm sound is un-comparable. When searching for a new clarinet I tried many, including the R13, LeBlanc Cadenza and a Yamaha Custom; but not of them compared to the sound produced by the Recital..

Excellent but not great instrument

Comments about Selmer Paris Recital Model Bb Clarinet:

An even scale with a dark but less full than I would have thought tone. The horn blew easily and produced well throughout the range but lacked, for me, that special resonance of sound I had expected in it. Tried with old Morgan/ VD 3 and then with VD 5RV with VD 3. Others may have different results and its certainly worth a try. Beautifully crafted in most regards though the gold leaf on the barrel lettering/logo had been sloppily applied and gotten into a broad area of the wood grain. No effect on sound but irritating in an instrument in this range. Nice case but the second barrel came packed in the bell since there is no where else it can be stuffed- again no effect on the sound but irritating.
