I've tried many mouthpieces on my Reference 54 alto even though it came with this one. I'm just one of those guys that has to try as many different combinations as possible before I make my decision. It came with a Super Session D but I play on an F with The Ultimate Ligature and a Rico Reserve 3 reed. I'd also like to try it with a Vandoren Optimum ligature and a Brancher ligature. The D is mellower than the F. The F sounds more aggressive and it's brighter but still full and rich. I tried a Bay ligature but the sound was more pop with it so I went back to The Ultimate ligature. The Super Session is definitely better than all the other mouthpieces I've used. The brighter mouthpieces made the high notes sound thin but not this one. The baffle is actually concave but it bends inward and then smoothly scoops down to the chamber which is a little narrower and longer than a Meyer chamber. I've never seen that before. Interesting. I really just started using it and I can't wait to give it some real playing time and see where my tone goes. Most new horns come with cheep crappy mouthpieces but with a Selmer I should have known better. It's my first Selmer.

This mouthpiece is great. I purchased the Selmer Reference 54 alto sax and this is the mouthpiece that was provided with it. To me it seems to be a lot like a Meyer. It responds great and plays awesome in the altissimo register. It sounds just a little bit brighter sounding than a Meyer as well. Great sound and is worth the money for a serious jazz player.

"Solved my problems with my Reference 54"

I bought my Ref 54 on eBay and it didn't come with a mouthpiece. I played a vintage C* Scroll mouthpiece that I used on my S-80 Series II Alto and immediately got a low C wobble that was reminiscent of my old Mk VI. After finding out that the Ref 54s come with the Super Session Mouthpiece, I bought one, an E. I love this setup! I can blow a comparatively lighter reed, usually a Jazz Select 2 hard or 3 soft and it sounds dark and complex with very little effort. It's very versatile, and can easily go back and forth between classical transcriptions and contemporary pops songs. It won't replace my Lakey for the rock and roll and r & b stuff, but makes an excellent jazz and classical piece.
