Hear it for yourself...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uBsfZI14TzU&feature=youtube_gdata_player Plays smooth and evenly toned throughout both octaves. I'm a truck driver and sometimes go weeks without practicing. This mpc makes it easy to resume... To change the "voice" of my sax, I use different reeds. But, the mpc stays the same... Darker, I use a leather ligature with a Vandoren Java green #1.5 or #2. Smooth jazz, I use a metal ligature with a Vandoren Java red #1 or #1.5. I have the F for my Alto and the I for my Soprano.

Beautiful. Colorful

I tried and E this on my yamaha custom 875 ex alto. It darkened the sound. It's a beautiful and warm jazzy sound. I don't know how selmer does it, but you get a fat and warm sound on the yamaha. Only coveat - it is a bit harder to project and control intonation so I've had to do long tones

Solved my problems with my Reference 54

I bought my Ref 54 on eBay and it didn't come with a mouthpiece. I played a vintage C* Scroll mouthpiece that I used on my S-80 Series II Alto and immediately got a low C wobble that was reminiscent of my old Mk VI. After finding out that the Ref 54s come with the Super Session Mouthpiece, I bought one, an E. I love this setup! I can blow a comparatively lighter reed, usually a Jazz Select 2 hard or 3 soft and it sounds dark and complex with very little effort. It's very versatile, and can easily go back and forth between classical transcriptions and contemporary pops songs. It won't replace my Lakey for the rock and roll and r & b stuff, but makes an excellent jazz and classical piece.

Great mouthpiece

This mouthpiece is great. I purchased the Selmer Reference 54 alto sax and this is the mouthpiece that was provided with it. To me it seems to be a lot like a Meyer. It responds great and plays awesome in the altissimo register. It sounds just a little bit brighter sounding than a Meyer as well. Great sound and is worth the money for a serious jazz player.
