It's true, I had just tried three soprano mouthpieces as an upgrade from my Morgan ProTone: Jody Jazz ESP 7, Vandoren V16 S7, Selmer Super Session G...5 stars should tell you which one I kept! The Vandoren emits a warm, fat, rich sound with good color, but doesn't have nearly the focus, clarity, or percussiveness of the Super Session. It made the Vandoren seem rather "stuffy." The Vandoren also had some notable intonation deficiencies, at least on my Antigua Winds Black Nickel soprano. After trying the Jody jazz, I learned to NEVER buy a metal mouthpiece for soprano...the sound was percussive but otherwise the control and response were way too fussy and still lacked the natural resonant properties of a Hard rubber piece. $300 is far too much for that piece; perhaps their DV or DVNY is much better. At the end of the day, my new Super Session G had the best overall intonation, response, control, as well as the most focused, clear, yet powerful and percussive sound without sacrificing a good range of timbre. I am mainly a smooth jazz/fusion player but this mouthpiece is so versatile I can do ANYTHING with it. I just can't stop putting my soprano down after buying this piece, forget about the price.
I've used Dukoff D6, Jody Jazz esp, Bari, Otto Link, Sugal, and several other aborted missions on my sopranos. The SPSS sounds and feels like the best features of all put together. I used to pair an ideal mthpc to each sax but this one works with them all.
I've been in the market for a new soprano mouthpiece for a LONG time. I've tried runyons, Jody Jazz (which I use and LOVE on my selmer series III alto), links, and practically anything else you can name. Nothing even came close to the super session. I ordered facings H, I, and J. I ended up with the I facing and I use a standard metal ligature (may try something new), and vandoren java 2 1/2's. I'm using an LA sax 650 horn so it's not the greatest, but this mouthpiece makes it sing. I can play it (and I have) in a jazz setting, or I fit in perfectly in a classical setting. Definitely no need for a second mouthpiece for both genres here. This has you covered. I might even replace my C* on my alto with one of these. In my opinion, this is easily the best soprano mouthpiece on the market today. And the fact that it is not tough on the wallet makes it just oh so sweeter.
After years of fighting with soprano using various other mouthpieces from Link to Bari to metal Selmer to Vandoren, my friend suggested I should try the Super Session. I have been playing on a G for over a year now and in my humble opinion this is the best soprano mouthpiece on the market! I tried the Jody Jazz as a comparison and felt that the Super Session was much more free blowing. I use it in conjunction with Vandoren ZZ 3's and the Vandoren Optimum Ligature. It is versatile enough to cope with any style you require of it, even playing altissimo register and multiphonics effectively! I highly recommend this mouthpiece.
This mpc can give you a warm finesse type sound heard by many smooth jazz soprano players today. It delivers a well rounded full bodied depth (if your chops can deliver) of sound. I have owned mine for about three months now and I am very pleased with it. I play a Yamaha Custom EX soprano with Vandoren traditional #3 reeds. For my ear, this setup creates a very inviting sound. Again, warm, clear and delivering perfect intonation.
