In my first year of oboe playing I bought reeds from different places. My face would almost turn purple and my sound was awful. After buying these reeds my sound has improved ten fold I am realizing the oboe player I can be with a clearer sound. I absolutely love these reeds and would recommend them to any oboe player.
I bought two of these reeds, as an adult beginner. I also found them extremely hard to speak. When they do speak, of course, they are fortissimo only. A good reed should "speak easily at the softest possible dynamic while maintaining a true sound" (according to one oboe reed authority). Both of the reeds I received had unmated shoulders and were thick at the tips. Probably a knowledgeable person could fix these problems and make the reeds what they should have been, but I cannot highly recommend these, for the reasons given. For myself, I will be trying other options in the future.
First of all, this reed needs to be soaked for a long while before it will be wet enough to actually play. Then, the problem is that to even begin to produce a sound, you have to blow super hard. My friend who also plays oboe has a different brand of reed and whenever we play a song, my face is PURPLE and i start feeling a headache coming, but her face stays the same color. I would not recommend these reeds, and i will not be buying them again.
As both a player and a teacher my experience with this brand has been very positive. These reeds offer beginners an easy to produce sound, and the consistency students need to develop good support. The lightness of the reed allows students to play easily without tiring quickly. They also offer more advanced players the strength and stability needed to create a good tone, as well as the capability to handle extreme registers and difficult passages. I would recommend this brand to any player that does not make their own reeds. It really is the next best thing.
As an experienced oboe teacher, I have tried the new Stradella reeds with all my students- beginning through advanced and have found them to be very responsive and easy to articulate. Students like the ease of starting the sound and the consistent chocolate-like tone that resonates evenly in all registers. The key for teachers in recommending this excellent new oboe reed to their students is to match the various reed strengths with the various embouchure strengths of their students- MS, M, and MH.
