Rack Systems are the Way to Go

I have a large custom rack system that I designed for my drums and cymbals. My Rockenfield-meets-Portnoy set consists of 10 Tama Granstar Customs plus two Artstar II bass drums with black hardware. I also have 19 cymbals, of which five are China types and eight are crashes. When I first got the set, the floor stand option went out the window immediately. A kit of this size and complexity needed a consistent and precise set-up, so I engineered a 4+ section multi-level rack system to do the job. It is basically three standard rack sections (and a short extension all the way to the right, to squeeze in just ONE more crash!!), supported by one leg at each joint. But the fourth section, which is all the way to the left and supports two crashes, two toms, and a pair of Octobans, is a tri-level overhang configuration that additionally complements The Fortress’ overall visual impact. The entire system is bedrock solid and absolutely immobile during use, and the memory locks make setting up 28 pieces of hardware a breeze. The weight savings achieved by eliminating all of those tripod bases also made it easier to transport. The fact that I am able to cram all of that percussive gear around me in a completely ergonomic layout is a testament to the versatility and flexibility of Tama's Power Tower rack systems.

I recently bought the Tama Power Tower rack system along with three rack extensions and I could not be happier with it. You can set stuff up exactly where you want it and it stays there. It is also very nice to get the toms off the bass drum to eliminate unwanted resonance of the toms when hitting the bass drum. This rack is built solid and fits nicely around the set. I was able to hang from the rack when it was all set up and it didn't budge. I will never use stands again or any other rack system for that matter. It's one of the more expensive racks on the market but it is worth it!
