The Doctor's Products Doctor Slick Cork TreatmentMore InfoAbout CorkCork is a wood product and as such needs special treatment. Your cork will last longer, remain supple and will not peel, chip or disintegrate if treated properly. Traditional "cork grease" is a petroleum based product that clogs the pores, fine structure and over time reduces the corks ability to absorb moisture, compress and rebound, ultimately leads to disintegration of the cork itself and leads to loosening the glue holding the cork on the tenon. The Idea behind the productThe idea for the product came during a visit to Italy and Emperor Hadrian's Villa outside Rome. Clay jars containing olive oil were found in perfect condition - including their contents - after 1500 years. The jars were sealed with native corks which appeared to be in wonderful condition, covered with bees wax and pine resin. How does it work?We all know that cork needs to maintain a certain moisture content to remain soft and supple from the wine industry where bottles are stored upright and the cork becomes brittle and cracks when you insert a corkscrew. In order to make the product fulfill it's job of smoothly lubricating the cork we were fortunate to get some great advice from an old Asian herbalist that suggested we use a special extract of the Slippery Elm Tree Bark. It worked so well that we call this additional ingredient - Nature's Teflon(TM). With Nature's Teflon(TM) the product is an ideal cork treatment which is slippery but not greasy, sticky, or smelly and is kind to cork.

The quality of this cork grease far surpasses any I've tried before. I've been using it for a year and my cork is in excellent condition, in contrast to frequent replacements and tight joints in the 8 years preceding. Joints fit together smoothly, never any problems with disassembly. Grease is not "goopy" and only an extremely thin layer of application is needed (it's the first grease I can actually chapstick on safely). I used to swear by Micro, then I found this. The fact that people use sticky, slimy, cork-ruining greases (i.e. all other brands I've seen) is a crime.
I just got a new clarinet and want to preserve the cork for as long as possible. My teacher suggested that I use Doctor Slick as she has on all of her clarinets. She said that petroleum based cork grease will "kill" the cork over time and turn it black and the glue holding on the cork will loosen. She uses nothing else than the "Doc's" products. Her experience for the last five years shows that her cork looks just like new.
I am a woodwind technician and have used Dr's products for several years. I think it is the best on the market.
I have been fed up with sticky, smelly cork grease for a long time. Finally found the Doctor's - Doctor Slick. It is slippery but not sticky and actually smells good. I like that it helps my cork too. I've had black cork disease before with my chap stick cork grease. Since I double on sax and clarinet I use it on both. It is not so slippery that my mouthpiece adjustment on the sax slips - just perfect.
This cork application is simply amazing! I was borrowing a bass clarinet and I couldn't get it together with any amount of petroleum based cork grease. I then put a small amount of Dr. Slick on the cork tenon and the bass simply just slipped together! I actually bought the Monster Tube that's available on Dr. Hendersen's website, and it is a great value (although a little bulky, but it's called a Monster Tube and I have room..). I have actually tasted Dr. Slick just to see what it tasted like: it wasn't bad (although not the best taste) and it's all natural so it won't harm a small child if they get into your case and eat a little. Overall excellent product!
Also, at the OU Clarinet Symposium, Morrie Backun said in his acoustic's class that he has done a study on Dr. Slick vs. normal petroleum based cork grease. He put a 2 small pieces of cork in a vacuum, 1 with Dr. Slick, 1 with petroleum based cork grease. After I think he said 3 months, they took the cork pieces out and the cork with the petroleum was disintegrating while the Dr. Slick cork was new and as supple as the day they started the study. Just some science to back up how awesome Dr. Slick really is! Try it!!!!!
