This Week In Music

With a fresh approach to both vibraphone and marimba, Dave Samuels brings an exciting take to mallet percussion. Already playing drums and piano at age six, Samuels has performed and recorded with artists including Gerry Mulligan, Oscar Peterson, Chet Baker, Stan Getz, Carla Bley, The Yellowjackets, Pat Metheny, Bruce Hornsby, Frank Zappa, The Fantasy Band; and with the groups he helped define: Spyro Gyra, Double Image, and The Caribbean Jazz Project.

While in college, Chicagoan Samuels harnessed his interests in both drums and keyboards to focus on vibes and marimba. His first international exposure came as a member of the Gerry Mulligan Sextet in 1974. He then went on to co-found and tour with the avant-garde groups Double Image, Gallery, and the Skylight Trio. A collaboration with Frank Zappa yielded Live in New York-1976, an album even the hypercritical Zappa considered a success.

Fans and peers have recognized Samuels' talents almost from the beginning. While with Spyro Gyra, the 5-time Grammy Nominated group was named #1 Contemporary Jazz Artist and Contemporary Jazz Group of the 80's by Billboard magazine. Other awards include Best Vibes Player in both Jazziz and Modern Drummer Magazine. Samuels received a Grammy Award in 2003 for Best Latin Jazz Recording with the Caribbean Jazz Project's CD The Gathering. In 2004 he received a second Grammy Nomination for Best Latin Jazz Recording for the Caribbean Jazz Project's Birds of a Feather, and again in 2005 he was nominated an unprecedented third consecutive time for the Caribbean Jazz Project's CD Here and Now Live in Concert. Samuels has also been recognized by election to the Board of Directors of the Percussive Arts Society has recognized Samuels by electing him to their board of directors, and he has been invited to serve with the Stamford Cultural Development Corporation.

Samuels, who is sponsored by Yamaha and Malletech, teaches at Berklee College of Music in Boston.

Tenor SaxophoneOn October 11, 1939, when tenor saxophonist Coleman Hawkins walked into the RCA recording studios in New York to record "Body and Soul," little did he know that he was about to enact one of the key events in the history of jazz.

The 3-minute song with a foxtrot rhythm was penned by Hollywood songwriter and conductor Johnny Green and first recorded by Paul Whiteman and His Orchestra in Britain. It hit the British charts in October of 1930 and held the number one spot for 6 weeks.

By 1939, the song had already been recorded by celebrated jazz musicians like Louis Armstrong, Benny Goodman, and Art Tatum. But none of them had performed it as Hawkins did. Following a 4-bar introduction by pianist Gene Rodgers, Hawkins swoops in with a solo that doesn't include a single note of the melody. Instead Hawkins glides over the chord changes with a bravado that presages bebop.

At the time Hawkins performed "Body and Soul" his departures from typical theme resolution and his unexpected time changes were startlingly new. Hawkins' recording was instantly popular and remained one of his most famous, eventually inspiring younger musicians like Charlie Parker.
