Thomastik Belcanto Cello StringsBelcanto actually started with a young cellist visiting the Thomastik-Infeld R&D department. Her hands were all swollen and red because of her allergy to nickel. Desperately she had been looking for cello string that didn't contain nickel, after all attempts to cure her allergy had failed. Up until that day, nickel was believed to be the only material for cello strings that could produce the characteristic cello sound. In the Thomastik-Infeld R&D, that's actually how a lot of success stories begin - an artist stepping in with a problem, an idea or a suggestion. This time the cellist's request resulted few year later in Belcanto and, as international reactions show, it has become far more than the solution for allergic cellists ...SpecsThe new string concept for Cello is based on a modern sound. A and D string have a steelcore, G and C string have a rope core. The C string has a tungsten layer to beef up the volume. There are two sets available: BELCANTO, which is a bright, clear, optimal balanced sounding set and BELCANTO GOLD, which is transparent, rich, and warm in timbre. The individual string tensions in both sets are harmonized to allow combinations of strings to fine-tune the instrument. The strings have excellent response and stay in tune very quickly. A nice feature about BELCANTO GOLD is the fact that the strings are 100 % nickel-free and therefore suitable for players having problems with allergic reactions.

I tried the Belcanto Gold Strings and was quite surprised at the performance. First, I found the break-in period to be longer than other strings, especially for the G and C strings. It took about 30 hours of playing time before they really started responding. However, once they had "arrived", the sound was glorious and the response was great. Alas, that lasted for only about 2 to 3 months, and then it started to deteriorate. Considering I'm only an amateur hobbyist, this is far too short a time for the benefit considering the price. If the price were lower, I would have rated the strings as 4 stars, but the short time of spectacular sound paired with the high price brought my rating down to 3.
I am currently trying a full set of Belcanto Gold on my good cello, because I was told they were like Larsen Soloist A/D and Spirocore Tungsten G/C, "only better".
First impression is very positive. The Belcanto Golds look great with their subtly golden color, and they sound and feel great because they are so much like the Larsen/Spirocore combination. No complaints at all about how they play or how they sound.
BUT, at least on my cello, the Belcanto Golds are NOT clearly superior enough to make me want to spend so much more money to get the Golds, when I can get nearly the same quality for less money with the Larsen/Spirocore combination.
