I was testing the Tom Crowns? out they were quite good, they have a nice sound. I thought they were free blowing but then again the cork wasn?t shaved down LOL (And yes, the cork needs to be shaved down when it?s new. It?s a nice advantage since you can adjust it to your desiring). But I can tell you that they were lighter then the Jo-Ral. There wasn?t much weight difference between the aluminum and copper bottom mutes either. There wasn?t too much stress or too uncomfortable when I was playing with them. I would recommend buying a Tom Crown with a copper bottom because there is a nice warmer sound then the aluminum. If you don?t believe me then try them out and listen carefully. A good mute though. Not too heavy, not to stuffy but that?s what I think.
I've been using the Tom Crown bass trombone straight mute for over 30 years. Yes- the same mute! This is a sturdy, great sounding mute that blends well in any setting. I find it very free blowing. Yes, you will probably have to file the corks to fit your horn, but that's better than having to have larger corks fitted for a large throated bell.
