Product Description
Ton Kooiman
Like top athletes, instrumentalists are constantly trying to get the best return on the energy and effort that go into the performance, while at the same time they try to maintain a free and natural playing posture and a perfect technique. The thumbrests offer both.
Product Overview and Specifications
KOOIMAN THUMB RESTS

WHY THESE NEW THUMB RESTS?
This universally adjustable thumb rest makes it possible to put the pressure point of the thumb rest from the first phalanx of the thumb to the space between the two joints. The lever momentum is much smaller at this point so the thumb can support the weight more easily. Much of the energy used for supporting the weight then becomes available for handling the instrument, and can be used to improve control and speed up playing technique.

HOW IT WORKS
In order to achieve a relaxed posture of the hand, the Kooiman thumb rests are movable in all directions and can be adjusted to suit the anatomy each individual musician's thumb and hand. A direct and positive effect on the freedom of movement of the entire hand (and especially of the ring finger and little finger) will be gained by the improved position of the thumb in relation to the instrument. This is achieved by means of a hollow-shaped casing that can be adjusted from left to right (Maestro), or by means of a hollow-shaped casing that is raised at a certain angle (Etude). In this way the hand is allowed to "open" and, as a result, will be more relaxed. From now on, inflammation of the tendons or fatigue in hand, arm or neck may be easily prevented.

I have over used my right thumb by playing clarinet, sewing using scissors and such for a very long time and now have developed some arthritis in it. I have been searching for something to help me with the pain and have tried neck straps, soft thumb rest covers and lately a hand and thumb brace. I saw the mistro and decided to give it a try. I had it installed by a very good tec. He fitted it to my hand. Now my clarinet fits me perfectly! I was amazed how much it helps. I can play for longer times with minimal pain in my thumb, wrist, arm and shoulder. I have large hands and the mistro allows me to play with my hand in a more comfortable, wider open position. It attached permanently to my instrument with three tiny screws. The main part of the thumb rest slides off for easy storage in my case. If you play with thumb hand and wrist pain like I have for some time, I HIGHLY recommend this gadget. I thought it would take a while to get used to it but I was amazed how comfortable it was for me right from the beginning. I do recommend taking it to a highly skilled technician and having it fitted for you. It needs to be someone who has experience in drilling holes in a clarinet without boring all the way through. It comes with detailed instructions. There are several adjustment places and included, an allen wrench. I tweaked the fitting a bit on my own after playing a couple of weeks, but I am sure I would have had a difficult time making the original fitting it myself.

THE ETUDE MODEL WAS A WONDERFULL CHOICE FOR ME! An immediate difference was felt on balance and handling. My confidence soared, as I have carpal tunnel in both wrists. I also suffer from arthritis as i have carpal tunnel in both wrists. I'm 69 years old and I suffer from arthritis but the Ton Kooiman Professional Thumb Rest really does "make all the pain GO Away!" This is an excellent choice for both beginners and professionals. RJ MEACHAM
