The only reeds I use are the 56 and the v12s. The 56 have amazing sound and I consistently find many great, useable reeds in each box. Spend the extra money and buy these reeds, or learn to make your own.
The RuLepic is a fine reed, and though I always sound beautiful when I play :) it is much easier to play beautiful when you have such a great reed to work with. I find that more of the box has reeds that are useable, just be careful that you don't use a reed too long or else the sound degrades, but that is just like any other reed. You can use the RuLepic reeds longer, if you don't damage them, and they really d o help you produce a more precise sound.
I was skeptic of claims online about it being a rounder sounding reed that the v12's. Out of the box, the v12's won in responsiveness+tone. But as I gradually, and patiently broke them in, I found these to be much warmer than the v12's. I have not yet decided if these are better than the v12's, I'd like to see what and how they sound like in an auditorium. From what I can gather in my home, I found these to more effective within harder walls, where I am able to receive a fuller feedback of what I am playing. The v12's sounded better in a room that doesn't reverberate as much. Based on my taste, not everyone is the same, I like the Rue Lepics. I just found a rival to the v12's.
My teacher told me about these reeds and they are my fav's. I'm one of the better musicians at my school and these reeds are the reason why. Their incredible intonation and tone has amazed my friends and directors. Rock on Rue Lepics!!!
These reeds are fantastic. Although they are pricey, they are worth it for the consistency out of the box. The "factory fresh" claim is valid; hopefully, Vandoren will follow up with this kind of treatment for all of their reeds. The cut of the reed (no filing or first cut) mskers for greatrer resiliency, and they play more like a great handmade reed.
I used V12's for a while and switched to Vandoren Selects. I found no difference in quallity of the best V12 compared to the Selects, except that the Selects, had more usable reeds in the box.
The 56 Rue Lepic were a whole different ball game.
Not only were they more consistant from reed to reed, but the entire box played.
The biggest difference was in strengths. I find the energy expended for 2.5 reeds much less than 3.0 reeds. The trade off is measued in hours of play. I get tired out faster using 3.0 reeds. The people who use 4's must have lungs of steel, :)
The problem with the 2.5 is that they make B flat, (A#) sound like I'm playing a kazoo, instead of a clarinet. For certain types of music, that's OK.
Whereas the 3.0 make less of a mockery of playing B flat. I usuall try to avoid B flat or re-write the music to avoid playing a lot of B flats in a song. ( Hard to do with Hymns!)
I am in love with these reeds, I have been using them for about three years and I will never switch to any other reed. These reeds give a gorgeous sound and in the box there are usually 7-9 good reeds. I highly recommend these reeds to any advanced student or higher.
These reeds are fantastic!!!! The sound is superb, and they are not at all hard to play or at all sqeaky. My clarinet sounds rich and very sweet in the upper registers. I would recomend these to any serious musician!!!!
First, the 56RL seems about 1/2 strength softer than V12. (The reed chart indicates only slight difference.) So "order up". While this is a bright and responsive reed with pure intonation, I find it is not as warm and full as others I generally use. A little thin-sounding on highest notes. Not what I want for most of what I play, but at times may be useful (think: Overture to Candide, for instance). The playability and consistency of reeds in the box are quite good.
I just recently started using the 56's. They are amazing! The response is superb, and high notes come out beautifully. My clarinet professor greatly approves! I use number 3's on a Vandoren M13 mouthpiece with a Bois Classique ligature on a Leblanc (by Backun) Cadenza. I would highly recommend these reeds.
