Vandoren B40 Lyre Bb Clarinet MouthpieceBased on the original B40 but slightly more open. This mouthpiece is designed to use soft reeds without sacrificing the sound quality of a stronger reed (centered and compact).

I was given the opportunity to play the first clarinet music in our local community band and was having a LOT of trouble with the high notes! I researched all the information and reviews on WWBW and decided to try the Vandoren B40 Lyre as it seemed to be the best decision for playing high notes with a softer reed. The first time I played it, I could tell the difference immediately! It is so much better for me using this mouthpiece! I am so grateful for the help in choosing the right mouthpiece for me! Thank you very much!
Needs softish reed, not always easy to find what you want.
Good with v12 and Rico regular.
Sound takes up space, facing gives flexibility
for intonation control.
I switched to this mouthpiece from the generic one that came with the clarinet. The difference was great! The upper octaves sounded a lot cleaner than before. Even with a bad reed I could reach some of the highest notes.
This mouthpiece sounds much like a B40 but is easier to play due to the longer facing. The high register is almost effortless and very clear. This mouthpiece plays with a nice focus but retains the "body" of the clarinet. Great mouthpiece.
If you dislike the popular vanilla Vandoren mouthpieces like me, consider the B40 Lyre. I have tried several B40s but found them hard to play at best but with a decent focused sound. I skeptically tried the B40 Lyre Profile 88 based on the Vandoren catalog write-up. What a nice surprise - easy sound emission with a nice full, focused tone. The longer facing makes a huge difference. It sounds great on my big bore Selmer. Try it, the price is right.
This is a very close mouthpiece but gives a lot of flexibility. I like the slight brightness and am now using this over my last handmade Pyne. I visited Vandoren in Europe and after trying all the mouthpieces they had to offer, found this to be my favorite. This may not be the best fit for dark orchestral playing (however).
