I have been using a B45 since I started playing clarinet in fifth grade, and am on my second now. They are extremely durable and have brought results for just about any situation thrown at me. It allows for an outstanding tone, and can be LOUD! My freshmen year of marching band i was able to stand out from an 80 person band during a solo without a microphone! Many of my friends have upgraded to a B45 at my recommendation and now refuse to use anything else. If your a starting musician, elementary or high school student, or even play clarinet non-professionally, this is the mouthpeice for you.
Out of all clarinet mouthpieces I have tried, the Vandoren B45 takes the cake! On both my wood Selmer and my plastic Vito clarinets the tone comes out clear and even through all registers. The mouthpiece also provides smooth and easy legatos and staccatos. From my experience I have found the mouthpiece works best paired with a rovner or a optimum vandoren ligature. It is easily worth the money.
The B45 was marketed by Vandoren heavily after its release as the "universal mouthpiece". Therefore, band directors everywhere jumped on the mouthpiece like crazy.
In my experience, the B45 is too open and too short of a facing to be desirable for many clarinet students. For instance, many directors will pair students with this mouthpiece and a size 2 reed, and steadily increase the reed strength to an ungodly degree. This leads to an innate difficulty to be flexible in playing, as well as response issues.
I would not outright recommend this model for students. However, it is well suited to those who can accommodate this facing with appropriate reeds. In Vandoren's more open mouthpieces, I believe the B40 Lyre is best, and one of the best overall.
I used this from middle school into high school (about 5 years). It worked really well and has a pretty rich tone. I'd recommend this as a great upgrade from a "generic" mouthpiece!
