Vandoren Bb German Clarinet "D Concept" MouthpieceThe Vandoran Bb German Clarinet D Series Mouthpiece is a Boehm system mouthpiece specially adapted to the German Clarinet and the "Reform Boehm", offered in two models: the M30D an B40D. The M30D offers a good balance between timbre and roundness, while the B40D produces a compact and centered sound. The length and diameter of the shank, the bore, the appearance of the tip rail and the external shape are the components of this new concept, which offers a perfect balance between a very warm sound and great intonation. 56 Rue Lepic reeds are more particularly recommended for these mouthpieces.

First things first: one's choice of mouthpiece is VERY personal. To some, this mouthpiece is fantastic; to others, it's not good at all; when picking a mouthpiece, make sure to try plenty of options and combinations to find what works best for you! That being said, I think Vandoren is a wonderful company, their products are wonderful and very consistent, and i've been performing on Vandoren mouthpieces and reeds since I first started on clarinet.
For me personally, the M30D gets a very smooth and refined sound. It has a fantastic legato and a great response. Because it is a more open facing, it often works best with softer reeds - I use them with V12 reeds, thickness 3.5. The idea of this mouthpiece is that is a German clarinet mouthpiece designed to fit on a French clarinet (what we use here in America). Thusly, it might be worth trying the mouthpiece with the Vandoren "56 Rue Lepic" reeds, which are designed more like a German cut reed. I didn't like it, but if you're looking for a more dark, covered, "German" sound, it may be worth trying - i still think this mouthpiece works best with V12s.
Overall, a fantastic mouthpiece - dark, refined, great response - definitely worth trying!
