My usual read of choice is the Vandoren Blue Boxes (3 1/2). I play on the Vandoren 5RV Lyre mouthpiece and lately have been in search of different mouthpieces and reeds. I read that the Blackmasters were a thicker cut and with my parts usually being in the higher ranger I thought these would be perfect to get a fuller sound and just an even better tone in my lower register. (Ordered in a 3) The reed took me a day or two to break in and I was very pleased at how well I could control my dynamics in the altissimo register, and also the quality of any reed that I selected from the box.
These reeds are so well made that you can almost begin playing regular rehearsals with them; a minimum of warm up/break in required. They sound true and strong and seem to last a few hours longer than my other Van Doren and Mitchel Lurie reeds.
I have been using these reeds for the past 12-yrs now and these reeds are excellent. I use tham on a Vandoren 2-Tone 5RV and the one is strong, smooth and very centered. The manufacturer states that these reeds are made for the German market, but I'm here to tell you that these reeds can be used successfully on standard clarinet mouthpieces. If you want to have a fuller sound with greater control, give these reeds a try.
