Vandoren Java Red Alto Saxophone ReedsVandoren Java Red alto saxophone reeds are Vandoren's first file-cut jazz reed, Java Red reeds have more flexibility and tonal body and produce a full, rich, centered sound with phenomenal projection and extremely precise attacks. They have a thicker extremity and a more flexible pallet than Van Doren's Traditional series, and they allow greater vibration over a larger surface area with maximum elasticity. This type of vertebral column gives the musician much greater playing flexibility, as the resultant elasticity zone is very large. The Java Red will take your sound to a whole new level.

I got these for my bari sax a couple months ago and couldn't play one. I had been playing Vandoren ZZ 4's so I ordered a box of 4's, but little did I know how much more sophisticated these reeds are. I tried a lighter strength and started sounding amazing! I really like these reeds but just try a lighter strength if this is your first time stepping up from ZZ or any Rico.
The Java Red reed is a very good product that offers a fat resonant sound throughout the range of the horn. I generally can find 8 to 9 reeds out of a box because I use an ATG kit to refinish reeds most reed brands are finished poorly. Once you master refinishing your reeds you'll be amazed at the improved quality of your sound. I recommend that you number and rotate your reeds throughout the week so that you never use the same reed two days in a row, this way reeds will last much longer. Also use the less desirable reeds for practice only and plan on using two different reeds for each practice session.
When I first used one of these reeds, I nearly fainted because of the rich, vibrant, and warm sound. But the one thing I don't get is why most artists say that vandoren reeds can only be used up to three times. One reed has been lasting me almost three weeks now and it still sounds incredible. There's really nothing else to say other than the fact that these reeds will really surprise you when you see how long they can really last.
These reeds are amazing! i always used Rico reeds and they where great but when i tried out these Vandoren Java Red's i felt like i entered a whole new world. The sound that these reeds make are phenomenal. From low notes to mid and high notes, the sound and tone quality you get out of these reeds are incredible. I've been playing for eight years in Jazz Band, Concert Band and even Marching Band, and these reeds by far are the best in all aspects indoor and outdoor. In any situation i was in, from chipping a reed to an old used reed, Vandoren reeds where able to back me up, the sound still came out clean and was clean enough to get me buy any trouble. I bought sizes 2 1/2 and 3, both are good but the 2 1/2 get a little raspy in the high notes. The size 3's are perfect for me, they hit the high notes and altissimo notes perfectly just how i want them, mid notes sound amazing, and low notes, lets just say they play for themselves, sound rich, fat, beautiful. I highly recommend these reeds to anyone from beginner to experienced, i give these reeds 5 stars. You won't be disappointed with these reeds, i believe Vandoren make thee best reeds ever.
I pulled out a couple of these and play-tested them for a few minutes each. They didn't blow me away at first. I let them dry out overnight (upside down and out of the case) and tried them again the next day. They both played beautifully! I let them dry out again, put them in a reed case and played one of them on a jazz gig last night. The sound and response were both very good. I felt like the reed did everything I asked it to. I haven't A/B'ed them with a fresh "regular" JAVA yet but I might be switching over to these!
