Vandoren Java Red Alto Saxophone ReedsVandoren Java Red alto saxophone reeds are Vandoren's first file-cut jazz reed, Java Red reeds have more flexibility and tonal body and produce a full, rich, centered sound with phenomenal projection and extremely precise attacks. They have a thicker extremity and a more flexible pallet than Van Doren's Traditional series, and they allow greater vibration over a larger surface area with maximum elasticity. This type of vertebral column gives the musician much greater playing flexibility, as the resultant elasticity zone is very large. The Java Red will take your sound to a whole new level.

The Java Red reed is a very good product that offers a fat resonant sound throughout the range of the horn. I generally can find 8 to 9 reeds out of a box because I use an ATG kit to refinish reeds most reed brands are finished poorly. Once you master refinishing your reeds you'll be amazed at the improved quality of your sound. I recommend that you number and rotate your reeds throughout the week so that you never use the same reed two days in a row, this way reeds will last much longer. Also use the less desirable reeds for practice only and plan on using two different reeds for each practice session.
I was immediately shocked by the unresponsiveness of the reed. Assuming it was just a dud I then went through the box and didn't find a single reed that played well with my Otto Link STM. I then repeated this process with my Meyer, Lakey, and Vandoren Java mouthpiece to no avail. Needless to say, I was pretty disappointed.
Even though I am new to the instrument I could immediately tell a difference between the Rico Royals and the Java Red reeds. They have a great rich sound. The quality even fresh out of the box is amazing.
The quest for the right reed is often-usually, in fact-a time consuming, frustrating endeavor that poses a challenge to any serious saxophonist or clarinetist. And any serious player knows that regardless of how good a horn and mouthpiece she has, how much shedding time, et cetera, it all comes down to the "plank". These days I'm playing a NY Meyer small chamber on alto that has been refaced to .088" (between an 8 and a 9) by the great Ted Klum; before I played a NYUSA small that Bob Carpenter refaced to about .080"-Bob is another master mouthpiece tech. Horn wise, I split my time between one of two King Super 20's-both old ones, and a 78k Mark VI. I have tried nearly every brand of reeds made, I think, and I have found these red-box Javas to be the ticket. Absolutely consistent, I usually get 7 or 8 out of the box that play great. Sometimes all of them will play great. Because they are so consistent, they end up being cheaper than any other reed I've used. But most importantly, for me they have the right sound. Vandoren has a vast selection of different reed models; because of their incredible consistency, whether the model is one a player likes or not, that IS how that model will play. Having played professionally for many years and having found the red box Javas to be the right alto reed for me, I can go to a gig or a session with an unopened box of them and know 5hat I will have several reeds that will do anything I need them to do. There is no price tag I can ascribe to that. Another reviewer mentioned that this particular reed is a bit stiffer than others, even of the Vandoren brand. I agree. And they are much stiffer than some brands, e.g., the Rigotti Gold that works pretty well on my .088" Meyer is the 3-1/2 light; the correct red box Java is a 2-1/2. An aside-the Rigottis are an excellent reed as well, but for me on this set up, the red box is the ticket. Another aside-in general I always recommend Vandoren products; because of their wide selection of reeds, mouthpieces and ligatures, there is almost always something they make that will work very well. Also, they are available in many places. So although I buy 98%+ of my reeds right here at WWBW, it's hearening to know that if I'm on tour and run out, I can usually find the Vandoren reed I need in any full service music store. Sorry for the extended diatribe-I hope this info helps!!
I pulled out a couple of these and play-tested them for a few minutes each. They didn't blow me away at first. I let them dry out overnight (upside down and out of the case) and tried them again the next day. They both played beautifully! I let them dry out again, put them in a reed case and played one of them on a jazz gig last night. The sound and response were both very good. I felt like the reed did everything I asked it to. I haven't A/B'ed them with a fresh "regular" JAVA yet but I might be switching over to these!
