Vandoren Java Red Alto Saxophone ReedsVandoren Java Red alto saxophone reeds are Vandoren's first file-cut jazz reed, Java Red reeds have more flexibility and tonal body and produce a full, rich, centered sound with phenomenal projection and extremely precise attacks. They have a thicker extremity and a more flexible pallet than Van Doren's Traditional series, and they allow greater vibration over a larger surface area with maximum elasticity. This type of vertebral column gives the musician much greater playing flexibility, as the resultant elasticity zone is very large. The Java Red will take your sound to a whole new level.

I love these reeds! I don't think that people understand that they need to do a little bit of their own work on them to get them to where it's perfect for them to play on. Like sanding parts of the reed smooth, and even shaving a little off. You can't just take a reed strait out of its package and expect it to be perfect in every way. But I have had to do very little work on these reeds compared to other Vandoren reeds.
I could taste the difference. This is the reed I've been looking for to compliment my RPC mouthpiece. I'm in love!
I was immediately shocked by the unresponsiveness of the reed. Assuming it was just a dud I then went through the box and didn't find a single reed that played well with my Otto Link STM. I then repeated this process with my Meyer, Lakey, and Vandoren Java mouthpiece to no avail. Needless to say, I was pretty disappointed.
From the minute I took these out of the package, they blew me away with the ease of playing each register (low and high) and the altissimo ease as well. I played a Java Red cut alongside a Rico Reserve reed and by far, the Java Red plays much better. It's a versatile reed - it's smooth and dark enough to use for a classic concert band or symphonic band, but just enough edge to use for a jazz band without having to sacrifice tonal quality. Fantastic reeds!
These reeds are junk. They sound REALLY stuffy and dull. They are also inconsistent - the strength varies a lot from one reed to the next. A complete waste of money.
