I've played on quite a few tenor mouthpieces over the last few years or so: hard rubber Otto Link (too stuffy), metal Link (great, but a little shrill at times), Jody Jazz ESP (slightly difficult in the low register), and a Sugal Kirk Whalum II (difficult to play). I had this mouthpiece in the closet and pulled it out a few months ago and it has become my favorite jazz gig mouthpiece. It is free blowing, even throughout all registers, effortless altissimo, and easy to play soft. Given, I wouldn't take it to a Rock & Roll or R&B gig because it is not bright or loud enough, but it really is great for jazz. It will provide plenty of sound for combo or big band gigs. For the price give it a shot. I like to use 3 1/2 ZZs with my T55 model. Hope that helps!
We all do it. Try this mpc/reed combination, happy for a while then try something else. This mpc isn't chops in a box, but it will let you play to your full potential. Quality is exceptional, very well finished. Tone and intonation are a cut above the rest of the mass produced on the market. I have a Java T95 and find it to be very easy blowing with an even scale and tone. Intonation is spot on. Forty-two yrs of playing and this is the best I've come across.
I was looking for an alternate to my Link metal mp but most of the hard plastic/rubber ones I tried felt too big in my mouth and sounded "stuffy". I had the opportunity to compare the Vandoren T55 and T75 with Otto Link 6 and 6* pieces in the store. The Links were again too stuffy for my tastes, I was looking for something with some of the cutting power of metal, yes still offering a more rounded sounded if I wanted to blow that way. And the Vandorens deliver! I went with the T55 because of its more middle-of-the-road, "all around" versatility. But the T75 is amazing too - it produces an enormous sound, easily competing with the Link metal IMO. These Vandorens are easy to move to from metal mouthpieces, no major adjustment period needed. And they offer more vareity in sound. I'm very glad they invented them!
I tried several different mouthpieces and the T95 with my H. Couf Tenor is Simply Fun and Magical. Nice combination. My Horn is Naturally Dark so with this mouthpiece it gives it a Full Fat Tone with a nice Jazz Edge to it. Thank You! Tone, Response and Feel were right for me! I've had this mouthpiece for several years now and just love it.
This mouthpiece is one of the best I've ever played. It's free-blowing, dynamic and responsive in every register. It is my favorite piece for jazz. The altissimo is effortless with the Java. Mine's a T45, and I use Vandoren Java 3 (green box) reed.
