After receiving the ligature i've now tried for hours to get the plate that came on the ligature off and had no luck. I've tried everything and the plate won't budge and i will be forced to send this ligature back. However upon playing the ligature with the plate that came on it the ligature was amazing. The response was great but i would have liked to use the other plates that came with it. I've found out on other sax forums that many people have had this problem, maybe Vandoren should have better Quality control.
Upon arrival of my awaited ligature i became deeply angry when i worked for hours to get the pressure plate that came on it off with no luck. It never came off. Although the ligature did play awesome with the stock plate, i would have liked to play on the others. I literally tried everything to the point of almost breaking it.
This ligature is the best I've found. Like most professional musicians, I've played on many mouthpiece and ligature combinations. Some are good, some are lacking. The Optimum is the finest alto sax ligature I've ever used... and at this insane price, it should be.
Any saxophonist knows that the ligature is one piece of gear we install and adjust every time we play. The design and workmanship on the Optimum is superb and using it is a joy. The cage slides on the mouthpiece with ease and the single knurled adjustment knob is super smooth, comfortable to grip and simple to adjust. Tension is applied uniformly and directly to the reed. Fine alignment is easy and precise. This design is a huge improvement over the classic and often crude twin-screw ligature.
I particularly like the clean design and the beautiful fit and finish of this ligature -- a real professional look. The adjustment knob is on the bottom and doesn't intrude visually or physically. The plastic cap installs smoothly and securely.
As to the 3 included tone plates, changing these is a snap... if one reads the instructions. My choice is the standard plate #1 with longitudinal ribs that provide maximum contact with the reed surface. I tried all 3 plates multiple times. As an experienced jazzer, I find absolutely no difference in sound quality among them.
In my opinion, the Vandoren Optimum ligature is a superior ligature and truly in a class by itself -- beautiful, exceptionally easy to use, and actually worth the extra money.
This ligature is really nice and I love playing on it especially with my Otto Link on Bari. Those low A's just belt out no problem
I just started playing sax and when I bought the sax my dad bought me several ligatures to try and this one was the best and made me sound like Kenny G. Of course my dad has given me many tips and techniques to play but this ligature has helped me achieve something I never knew I could in music. Dreams do come true. Thanks Vandoren!
