Great, defined warm sound. Moderate, tasteful vibrato. Difficult, nearly impossible to bend notes. Not good for jazz playing at all. A rather quiet sound, moderately dynamic. However, if you want a consistent and colorful classical tone, this is very good choice. For the price, check it out! (Played the SL4 with Rovner Ligature on my Antigua Winds 590LQ, great horn BTW).
I play an SL3 with a number 3 Legere on my Antigua Soprano. I use my setup for Klezmer. This reed comes across as warm/ complex to my ear. I tried an Selmer C* before this. The Selmer was too bright for my taste, and I had a feeling that it blended well with other instruments only to the extent that it would come out as the "lead" instrument in a group. The Selmer had a lot of resistance. The Selmer sound was very penetrating compared to the VanDoren. The VanDoren , on the other hand, is a great blender. However, the VanDoren is not particularly penetrating, definitely on the soft side for volume, and it would be pretty difficult to be 'edgy' on it. The SL3 has just the right amount of resistance for me-yes there is something to blow against, but for a 'classical' soprano, I would classify it toward the open- blowing end of the spectrum. I am going to try an SL4 facing next, for use in outdoor, un-amplified gigs.
This is a great soprano mouthpiece for a reasonable price. I would advise getting the SL4. It takes some getting used to but the reward is a nice full soprano sound. Have tried this mouthpiece with many ligatures, and I have fount that the Francois Louis Ultimate Ligature provides amazing response and a brighter tone for jazz. I highly recommend trying this if you're looking to buy just one mouthpiece for jazz and classical on your soprano.
