I started using Vandoren reeds awhile ago and since then i have completely LOVED them. I only use them on special occasions and i practice on Rico's. Right now I am using a 3 and it gives me SO MUCH control in the upper register.
I've been playing clarinet for 6 years and I decided to try Vandorens in 8th grade. Now, don't get me wrong; I love Vandorens, but I'm glad I waited that long. Vandorens are probably not a good idea for at least your first two years. I use Vandoren 3s. It seems a good fit. Keep in mind that Vandorens are harder sizes than Ricos (which most people start on). I would use a Rico 3 1/2, so I use a Vandoren 3.
Id been playing Ricos and Mittchel lurrie reeds for a long time and was just not satisfied with the tone. Vandoren was what my friends were using. Just a day befoore the production opening day I had all my reeds stolen and got one from a friend. It was no doubt one of the best reeds I have ever used. I went and bought a box the next day, never will go back.
Vandoren makes a great reed. The classic cut produces a vibrant lively sound. They are a nice dense cane, better than some of the porous varieties other brands are selling. It gives a richer, more resonant tone and a reed that lasts.
The Vandoren reeds are good for intermediate players. In the 6th grade we had started on the basic Rico reed size 2.5. The strength on the basic Rico reed wasnt very steady, much like the way the basic Vandoren. I didnt really like the way that it was inconsistant with the sound. In the seventh grade we switched from a strength of 3 to 3.5 in Vandoren, but it was still very inconsistant. Then in the 8th and 9th grade we began playing on Rico Reserves and Rico Grand Concert Evolution reeds. I really like their consistancy alot better. It is well worth the money to play on the more expensive Rico reeds. Even in Marching Band you can hear difference in the more expensive Ricos and the Vandorens. Listen to us play in concert or in marching band. The quality of the sound is so much better with the Ricos!!!
