The V16 is a great mouthpiece for so many reasons it has a big sound can be used in really a lot of styles of music i personal think from all the music i have played it creates a great sound for me and i play many types of music and it can adjust easily. What i like about the hard rubber compared to the metal is where you can really make a huge difference in the dynamic levels the metal version is just loud and know color really anyway by this because it will bring out whatever sound you are looking for
I used to play a rubber link that I chose among around fifty mouthpieces including Bergs, Ponzols, and several other links. For me the true sound of tenor is the rubber link, but all those mouthpieces have the same problem, even if they have a great sound, they are quite hard to control specially for openings like 7 and above. They're quick made and very irregular. The rubber Vandoren V16 has completely solved that control problem, allowing to produce more precise articulation and better nuances, and offering a great Link like sound. Every mouthpiece is perfect and really read friendly. I suggest using it with the Vandoren Optimum mouthpiece.
I recently recorded myself playing my Yannie 991/Vandoren V-16 #7/JaZZ reed # 3. I used a quality digital recorder and placed the mike close enough to capture every nuance. I was blown away with the wide ranged consistency of tonality, accurate pitch, and the endless expressive capabilities. I love the sound. I love the horn. I love the mouthpiece. I love the reed. I can't imagine playing any other set up for combo jazz and big band. I also use it in a classical sax quartet, and the V-16 allows me to blend in very well. I have tried others, but I honestly can't see paying more for a mouthpiece that is not really any better. Oh, I use the Rovner lig, if that makes any difference. Did I mention the very wide dynamic range of this set up? I also have an "8" when I don't have a long gig to play, because it has a slightly "heavier" quality, but with the same projection and expression. I feel as though these pieces were custom built just for me. Don't spend too much money on a mouthpiece unless it makes you a better player.
This mouthpiece is probably the best thing that ever happened to me.(as far as music goes) I play on a Saxophone.com tenor sax model and it roars when the V16 is on it along V16 #3 reeds. I got the T7 which I was surprised to see, was the lowest facing available. But the rich, solid tone this mouthpiece provides is an amazing jazz tone. By talking into the instrument while playing, I can now make a mean, nasty, powerful tone like that raspy sound of Clarence Clemmons. I can listen to the classical jazz stuff and create a prefect match in sound compared to John Coltrane and several other legends. (They?re not lying when they say, "This mouthpiece is designed to imitate the sound response of jazz mouthpieces from the 50's.") All I can say is that if you want an amazing mouthpiece that will allow you to create the prefect TRUE JAZZ sound, choose Vandoren V16.You won't regret it.
Well I used to use one of the Selmer metals and I thought that was just too plain edgy for me. I bought the V16. The first thing that came to my mind was "This is a huge mouthpiece!" I tried it and I was just amazed on the projection I had with a mellow feeling in my sound with the Vandoren JAVA reeds, but once you put some ZZ on that monster, it will roar. I'm planning to get the optimum ligature for the mouthpiece and hope for the best with it. If you are looking for a mouthpiece with some huevos and smoothness, the V16 is a must for you, unless you are a metal type of person I guess...
