Switching from a metal moutpiece to hard rubber was a hard decision (no pun intended), but it was the right one! I purchased a Vandoren V16 A6M and have loved every second with it! The range of my saxophone has opened tremendously and with a more fluid movement. The piece resonates quickly and provides a sleek and open tone for any player. I'm the prinicipal alto in my university's jazz ensemble and the mouthpiece allows me to cut through the entire band if I want, yet keep it under control when needs be. It's also great for small combo work. If I had to go back and choose again, I'd choose a larger facing, although the A6 speaks very clearly. Try it with size 3 to 3 1/2 Vandoren ZZ reeds and you'll have a winning combination that's sure to captivate and compel your audience!
Vandoren mpc's are so incredibly consistent. I've played at least a dozen of them by now and they ALL played. The alto V16 mpc looks and plays similar to a Meyer. There looks to be a bit more roll over baffle and the chamber might be a touch smaller. The response is immediate and the sound is fat, loud and complex with just the right amount of brightness. Like I said, I have yet to encounter a "dud", which is pretty remarkable. I like the A6M with a Fibracell Med Hard reed. Very easy to play with; a nice focused and resonant tone. Definitely check this out.
This piece is the real deal. Awesome tonality and projection. Some alto pieces can be "shrilly" but this one can reach out and touch without being too piercing to the listener. Allows the true sound of the horn and player to come through. I'm in love with it. I believe ANY reed will do on this piece. I'm using the A8M,zz 2.5's or rico j/s 3's, w/VD optimum. Yesss Sirrr!
I had been primarily a tenor player for many years when I first encountered these while auditioning mouthpieces for my daughter. She chose a different mpc, but this one rose to the top for me. I hadn't planned to get my own new alto mouthpiece, but I wound up trying the A6S, A7S, A7M, A8S, and A9S. I went with mainly the "small" chamber pieces because they're not actually very small and don't give the thin and piercing tone that truly small chambers can yield. It was easy to narrow it down to A7S & A9S. The A9S was attractive for its openness and extra flexibility, but I finally chose the A7S because it gave me more of the classic lead alto sort of sound with a Rovner dark lig and Fibracell medium reed.** You can easily get plenty of edge and VOLUME if you want it, but the mellow side is also easy to find.
** NOTE: the current number-graded Fibracells (3, 3.5, and 4) sound really buzzy to me with this MP. I haven't yet settled on a new synthetic reed since they stopped making the word-graded Fibracells.
I have been using a Morgan size 5 medium chamber alto mouthpiece for close to 20 years. I was satisfied with the sound of the Morgan, but wanted a little more edge without sacrificing body. The V16 A6 sm. chamber fit the bill. The tone is clear but not strident. I get an edge, but with a warm, focused center. Intonation is accurate and the mouthpiece has great control. Of course, as with any mouthpiece, matching it to the correct reed and ligature is key. I find Alexander Superial 3 or Vandoren JAVA 3 are good matches. This is couples with a Vandoren M/O ligature.
