I had tried several different mouthpieces-Brilhardt Level Air, Berg Larsen, Rousseau JDX, Runyon Smooth Bore, and Dukoff -all with varying degrees of disappointment. All had the same problem: my Yamaha bari sax was always flat ESPECIALLY with Low A (10-15 cents at least) AND no projection. I finally tried the Vandoren V5 Jazz - problem solved! The ONLY thing negative about this mouthpiece-ligature choice is very limited. I use a Rovner ligature, and it does the job nicely and inexpensively.
Before this mouthpiece I played on a Meyer 5 Bari mouthpiece, but I didn't like it much because the low notes (Bb and A) were hard to hit, as well as the higher than high E range. With the Vandoren Jazz Mouthpiece, it not only is it easy to hit those notes, I can hit them quietly and loudly without sacrificing tone at all! The only problem is that it doesn't come with a ligature and many other ligatures don't fit, so get one specifically designed by Vandoren, and the mouthpiece will be amazing.
This has to be the best baritone mouthpiece. Paired with Vandoren ZZ reeds this mouthpiece can play from explosive, right down to ppp on the low notes. This pairs really well with my vintage Buescher 400, with this piece I can easily release that notorious Buescher growl.
