Vandoren ZZ Tenor Saxophone ReedsVandoren ZZ tenor saxophone reeds are designed to supply what are often mutually opposing characteristics in a reed--depth of tone and immediate response. Added to this seemingly impossible solution to one of the reed musician's most enduring conundrums is the fact that ZZ reeds are free-blowing and easy to play. Impossible you say? Put the lie to this bold claim if you can. All that’s left for you to do is play to become a believer.Vandoren's ZZ reeds feature a unique relationship between the heart of the reed, where the tone is produced, and the thickness of the tip, which is responsible for vibration. The result is a reed with extraordinary tone and immediate response that is free-blowing even in the altissimo range. The ZZ reeds accomplish this immediate response without sacrificing brightness or tone quality.Professional saxophonists like L.A. recording artist Gary Foster, Delmark recording artist Frank Catalano, and many others have made the switch to Vandoren’s ZZ reeds for both live performances and studio recordings. According to a Vandoren reeds chart, ZZ reeds feel one-half strength less thick in comparison to Vandoren Traditional reeds, and run even in strength with JAVA reeds. For example, a Vandoren ZZ strength 3 reed would feel equivalent to a Vandoren Traditional in strength 2.5.

I have been playing alto for several years, but always loved the phat jazz sound of tenor saxes, so I bought one. I bought my tenor sax from WWBW because of their impeccable customer service and return/exchange policy. I have been searching for that reedy, buzzy sound that I love so much and had the wonderful opportunity to hear when I heard Richard Elliot in person. There are a million mouthpiece/reed combinations. Am I wrong? I think not. I came across a tenor Strathon Adjustone mouthpiece on the internet and jumped on it. I then bought some ZZ 3.5 reeds. I took a flexible fingernail file (the kind with the foam center) and used the smooth side to sand down the heart of the ZZ 3.5 to let the reed "move". I ended up with that buzzy jazz sound that everybody is looking for. My search is over!!
These are the best reeds that I found after trying many types. However, they go flat vary quickly (went through one weekly) in high altitude. If one is willing to accept this, then they shall gain a very high performing jazz reed which can permit many different licks to be played with exceptional ease.
This is my goto reed on Tenor and Alto, the pure tone and responsiveness gives me what I am looking for in a reed. I like a full warm tone and on my Jody Jazz Classic 7 (alto), I can push this reed while leading the sax section and soloing. On my Jody Jazz HR 7* (tenor) I get the full tone and warmth that I desire in a combo setting. I play 3s on both horns and love them.
I have found these reeds to be excellant on an Otto Link Super Tone Master. They produce an entirely different sound from other "jazz" reeds like Rico Jazz Select and La Voz and really let the Link open up. It is more buzzy, but it is a good buzz and does not take over the sound, only add to it. As the other reviewer found, they do tend to run a tad soft, but I think that is part of what makes them sound different. A harder ZZ reacts and sounds more like a different type of reed, but your results may vary. Highly recomended.
I'm an experienced musician but new to tenor. I'm currently playing a Meyer 6 HR mouthpiece and have tried many reeds. I use plasticover reeds in the pit because tenor has to sit for over a half hour and I don't have time to worry about wetting a reed. As for cane (wood) reeds the ZZ 3's are the only reeds that I am ordering again. They sound great and cover the entire range very well.
