Vandoren ZZ Tenor Saxophone ReedsVandoren ZZ tenor saxophone reeds are designed to supply what are often mutually opposing characteristics in a reed--depth of tone and immediate response. Added to this seemingly impossible solution to one of the reed musician's most enduring conundrums is the fact that ZZ reeds are free-blowing and easy to play. Impossible you say? Put the lie to this bold claim if you can. All that’s left for you to do is play to become a believer.Vandoren's ZZ reeds feature a unique relationship between the heart of the reed, where the tone is produced, and the thickness of the tip, which is responsible for vibration. The result is a reed with extraordinary tone and immediate response that is free-blowing even in the altissimo range. The ZZ reeds accomplish this immediate response without sacrificing brightness or tone quality.Professional saxophonists like L.A. recording artist Gary Foster, Delmark recording artist Frank Catalano, and many others have made the switch to Vandoren’s ZZ reeds for both live performances and studio recordings. According to a Vandoren reeds chart, ZZ reeds feel one-half strength less thick in comparison to Vandoren Traditional reeds, and run even in strength with JAVA reeds. For example, a Vandoren ZZ strength 3 reed would feel equivalent to a Vandoren Traditional in strength 2.5.

I have found these reeds to be excellant on an Otto Link Super Tone Master. They produce an entirely different sound from other "jazz" reeds like Rico Jazz Select and La Voz and really let the Link open up. It is more buzzy, but it is a good buzz and does not take over the sound, only add to it. As the other reviewer found, they do tend to run a tad soft, but I think that is part of what makes them sound different. A harder ZZ reacts and sounds more like a different type of reed, but your results may vary. Highly recomended.
I bought a box of 5 3.5 strength reeds, and not one of them was acceptable.
After playing a few, I couldn't really get the sound to resonate. I started to look at the reed itself, and noticed major differences in the cut. One edge of the reed would be nearly twice the depth of the other, etc.
All of the reeds in the box were easily spottable as misshaped. Playing them resulted in a reed that just didn't respond.
This is not the Vandoren quality I used to know.
When I purchase a box, I want at least a couple to be playable. This was a major disappointment.
I ordered a box of these awhile back and was surprised as to the quality. I had to chuck about 2 out but the others held up rather nicely. Right now I?m playing on a Mark VI, and it screams with these. Have a decent life span, highly recommended.
These are some great reeds. They have a bit more harmonic buzz than most brands, which is a good thing. Like all cane reeds, they are fairly inconsistent but not badly so. I think the strengths may run just a tad bit soft, but probably not enough to justify going up a strength. I think they'd work particularly well for player who use darker mpc's. This reed may help clear up the sound. Definitely worth trying.
This is my goto reed on Tenor and Alto, the pure tone and responsiveness gives me what I am looking for in a reed. I like a full warm tone and on my Jody Jazz Classic 7 (alto), I can push this reed while leading the sax section and soloing. On my Jody Jazz HR 7* (tenor) I get the full tone and warmth that I desire in a combo setting. I play 3s on both horns and love them.
