This horn is by far the most versatile euphonium I've ever heard. Parade route, football field, concert hall, even the gymnasium. This horn has the same rich, dark sound whether you're 2 feet away or 100 yards. Truly the best horn to have no matter what the situation. Though there is no thumb trigger, an experienced ear will easily be able to make any adjusments needed. It blends during ensemble work and sticks out for solos.
p.s. Since others included this I suppose I should. It was a brand new school horn purchased in 2007 and I used it from September, 2007 to June, 2009. The only trouble I had with it was stopping myself from taking it when I graduated.
The Willson 2900S is a great horn. I've been playing on one of the older models. (Don't know how old.) It can have a very dark, tenor tuba like sound with a well seasoned player. Personally, I like the rich, dark, tenor tuba sound. If you don't like a dark sound on the euphonium, this isn't the euphonium for you. The problem I have with this horn is that the F's, Eb's & E's right above the staff are really sharp. The A natural and Ab in the middle register are really flat. (You have to use many different alternate fingerings to pull the pitch up or down.) This may not be a problem for the newer Willson euphoniums. All in all, the Willson 2900S is a fantastic horn. I recommend this horn to all serious euphonium players.
This is the horn I'm looking to purchase when I save up the money. My school just bought two of these horns and they are amazing. Such a dark and rich tone. I played the Besson Sovereign before this and that is a very free blowing horn compared to this. The low register is very responsive. With well adept chops, this horn can sing in the high register. Definitely the pro level horn to buy.
I have been playing on a Willson 2900S that is older than myself -- made in the 70s I believe. It is a university horn, so isn't in the best shape, but it still puts out an amazing sound and works very well in both an ensemble and a soloist setting. Doesn't have a tuning trigger... use your face.
