The Willson 3400 FA5 is nothing short of phenomenal. A large dark sound is possible with the right mouthpiece, or a brighter soloist sound if you use a shallower cup. I think a bowl cup works better than a funnel mouthpiece, like a Helleberg and gives the horn "color". Exceptionally free blowing low register down to a pedal Bb. Best used in brass band as an Eb tuba, it is a very versatile horn with a good scale and lots of "core". I found the "C" (bass clef second space, "a" in treble clef music, fingered 1, 2) to be very sharp and third valve is a very good substitute fingering. This is the only note I found that needed a lot of adjusting if you want to use 1, 2 fingering and pull. 1 and 3 fingering can be used to great effect due to the vented first valve. Horn is very even across all valves and is a joy to play. Can be used as a solo instrument, in quintet work, small orchestra and brass band. Penetrating, solid sound. Beautiful instrument, very dense and physically heavy, buttery smooth piston valves. You will probably want to use a stand, but is possible to play with horn on a chair seat. Horn takes a lot of air, but is very fluid and projects well. Custom molded hard case is available for extra cost. Glenn Cronkhite has made a custom gig bag for me for this horn and is available for special order worth the $350 plus shipping to protect your investment. I would highly recommend this instrument to any advanced student or professional to include in his arsenal of equipment. Swiss made and shows it.
