I purchase four of these reeds. I had to adjust the reeds slightly to get them the way I wanted them. They have been excellent. And what I like best about them is that they play the same way all the time and they last a long time.
So I can play the rehearsals and the concert without modification or worry about the reeds performance.
No more having dozens of cane reeds that are constantly in need of adjustment.
I began using this reed under the recommendation of a music faculty member at my college. I took a woodwinds methods class, he recommended that I use a synthetic reed because I might not have a chance to play bassoon for a long time and cane reeds deteriorate. This reed got me through the class as well as many performances in my college's symphonic band, woodwind ensemble, and church orchestra. It plays well in tune with little adjustment, doesn't require any soaking in water, plays much louder than cane reeds allowing the bassoon to actually be heard in the band or orchestra, and is really inexpensive when you look at the cost of the cane reeds. I still have this reed and use it religiously when I need to play bassoon. I definitely recommend this reed to beginners or hobbyists because as long as you don't damage it, it will last pretty much forever.
These plastic reeds have saved us hundreds. My son is only 12 and playing in band for the first year. The cane reeds are so fragile that he was breaking them after only a few days. The plastic reeds are much more durable and quite sufficient for a beginner.
