After having many reeds break during marching and pep band I decided to give a plastic reed a try. When the package came I was throughly excited to test out my reeds. For starters, the first problem I had was when ordering the reed I didn't know how soft, medium, and hard fell into the matching reed number I have (3) so I decided to order both a soft and a medium. After trying both I discovered that one was too hard and one was too soft. The pain with these is that they aren't able to be changed to fit your strength. This is the biggest downfall. After using them for a while I decided that plastic reeds aren't all that bad in the tone quality but they do take awhile to get used to. They don't change with the weather and I have yet to have mine break. (I have had them for four months) Overall I would say that if you can find one that matches your strength go for it. Otherwise a wood reed with a plastic coating would be your best bet.
I ordered a hard strength reed, which I found to be the equivalent of a regular Vandoren #3 reed. There's a slightly buzzy sound, but for the money, it's a great reed. I recommend it for marching, but not performances.
While playing in "the pits" for many musicals, etc. over the years, I noticed the woodwind players were frequently required to change instruments without much time. In order to make a single reed instrument play and respond quickly, the clarinet/saxophone players frequently used plastic reeds quite successfully. This nicely solved the problem of doubling on single reed woodwinds when the instrument has to play "RIGHT NOW!" with no time for wetting the reed, etc. Also works well for marching band.
